Ok so we all know Kishi screwed over the females of the NV by either:

Nott giving them enough to do: Sakura, Hinata, Ino, Tenten

Not making them as interesting as their male counterparts: Sakura, Tsunade ( Both in relation to the rest of their respective teammates and teachers.

Sticking them in the background or just plain forgetting about them: Shizune and Anko

Giving them one showing of their abilites and then trying hype them by proxy (other character's testifying to their strength): Kushina, Karin, Kurenai (who got the worst of it by having one fight and then being being shipped off on maternity leave for the rest of the series)

and lastly, defining female priorities by the men they are romantically attached to: Sakura, Hinata, Kurenai, Tsunade, Karin, Rin

What are some things you would have liked to have seen these respective characters do or what aspects of their characters would you add to better define them?

I wish all characters had a good amount of panel time. About 75% of the manga was Naruto and Sasuke and that only leaves 25% for other characters who were written much better ( Danzo, Kakashi, Tobirama etc) than they are.

@Bold
Don't forget Kabuto. How many chapters focused on his character and background? We never saw Sakura's parents in all 700 chapters but we know all there is to know about second tier villain like Kabuto.

There's this problem in fiction in general where female characters are defined by their gender too much. Same often happens with characters belonging to various ethnic groups and such. To Kishi, it's obvious that "female" equals "sensitive/caring/romantic/better suited for supporting roles" - nothing wrong with that, but you don't get much variety like this. Even the stoic Konan was loving and caring - we never got to see a truly evil or crazy woman (a la Deidara or Hidan), or even a truly tomboyish one (I guess Kurotsuchi is the closest but she has too little screen time).

I think he should have given Sakura genjutsu.

She was said to have an affinity for genjutsu in Part 1 right? But she just became a Tsunade clone.

Naruto learned Sage mode from Jiraiya, but he also had a Bijuu
Sasuke learned Snakey jutsu from Orochimaru, but he also had a dojutsu
Sakura learned medical jutsu and chakra enhanced strength, and that's it.

While Naruto was training with Jiraiya and Sasuke with Kakashi around the Chunin Exams, he should have had Sakura learn genjutsu from Kurenai. :hmm:

What's the point of genjutsu? When you have Uchiha like Itachi,, Sasuke and Obito runinng around with eyes that come installed with amped genjutsu casting and breaking abilities. Genjutsu was rendered useless when a jonin like Kurenai and Oro's genjutsu were rendered usless by Itachi.

Hell Itachi and Sasuke's 3 tomoes genjutsu battle illustrated how the sharingan makes genjutsu irrelevant in a fight against another skilled genjutsu (dojutsu) user.

So just because 3 people out of all the Narutoverse alive have the ability to break genjutsu with their eyes, genjutsu is useless to learn? Lol

By that logic, Pain can absorb ninjutsu. Guess it's pointless for anyone to ever learn ninjutsu :snick:

It would have been good if Sakura wasn't purely medic based and CQC hitting. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Kishi could have had her use senbon like Haku; use her medical knowledge to target vital area's of enemies. That plus how she is now less the Sasuke obsession would have been cool. Also, she should have been able to learn some Ninjutsu.

Absorbing Ninjutsu is a useful abilites and was utilized by one (at first) person and then expanded to three.

In the grand scheme of things, being a genjutsu caster has never won a fight for anyone who wasn't a sharingan user and even then it's not always the clencher. See Sasuke vs Bee or Tobirama vs Izuna.

Sakura learning genjutsu wouldn't have made her more relevant to the plot is what I'm saying. She would specialize in something that would always pale in comparison to what Uchiha can do.

Genjutsu is useful as well. It doesn't need to be an automatic win for it to be useful.

It may not have made her more relevant, but it would have given her an ability that set her apart from Tsunade.

There are numerous genjutsu users in the Narutoverse that aren't Uchiha.

He should of developed Hinata more in the areas aside from 64 palms. She could of definitely had rotation, and advanced versions of her current abilities that made her seem more powerful.

Elemental variations would have been cool too, Taijutsu, and Shushin feats. Same goes for every bar female in the manga who have little no feats when the time is right.

Cause females who have actually improved over the original Part 1 time-skip were reduced to being called fodder when they were up against enemies who far surpassed them (JJ Madara - Sakura, Pain - Hinata, etc.,) and then their actual feats don't help much either.

He could haven Sakura few long range elemantal ninjutsu and genjutsu for which he hyped her
Sakura and Tsunade have the same essential problems. Compared to their counterparts, each of them is less powerful and less interesting than their male counterparts.

Naruto has Uzumaki vitality/massive chakra reservoir (branch of Senju), Ashura transmigrant, toad sage mode, rikudo sage mode, Kyubi chakra and modes, 8 bijuu chakra and their elemental natures, rasengan + variants, wind nature, kage bushin, toad summons, , frog kata

Sasuke has Uchiha heritage, Indra transmigrant, sharingan, eternal mangekyou sharingan with amaterasu, PS susuano w/arrows, enton, rinnegan with chakra absorbing, amenotejikara, amped genjutsu, chibaku tensei, snake summons, chidori + variants, lightning and fire natures, kenjutsu

Kakashi has/had MS sharaingan, kamui, lightning + water + fire + earth natures, raikiri + varaints, dog summons, 1000 jutsu, fuinjutsu, genjutsu

Orochimaru is based of the character from The Tale Jiraiya the Gallant. A Japanese folk tale. Oro has wind nature (maybe more i can't remember), genjutsu, snake summons, snake transformations, great white snake, 8 headed dragon, edo tensei, rashomon, kusanagi blade, Orochimaru style substitution, curse seals, soul transfer, healing power, fuinjutsu, kenjutsu

Jiraiya like wise is based of the Japanese folk tale. He has Fire and Earth Nature, toad sage mode, toad genjutsu, toad oil, rasengan + variants, fuinjutsu, toad summons, frog kata, hair jutsu (needle senbon and raging lion mane), barrier jutsu.

Hiruzen is based off the Sun Wukong from the Chinese tale Journey to the West. See also Son Goku from Dragon Ball and Son Goku from Saiyuki. A lot of the character's traits from the tale are apparant in Hiruzen. The monkey theme, the nyoi boi, the five elemental natures (most notable breathing fire), monkey summons, unnatural strength.

Sakura and Tsunade have medical ninjutsu, chakra enhanced strength, regen/100 healings, slug summons and that's it. While Tsunade does have her senju lineage/vitality going for her; compare to her grandfather (Hashi) and grand uncle (Tobi), she's a poor reflection. Tsunade is inspired from the Japanese folk tale Jiraiya the Gallant, like her team mates. In the tale she is a princess who specializes in slug magic. Compared to their male counterparts, the women have the least going for them.
