Finished Dog Days, pretty awesome stuff. Looked like it would just be a silly light-hearted tale but it ended up being even more than that.

Basically, a very athletic boy named Cinque Izumi is summoned to another world known as Flonyard, which is a pretty fantasy-ish setting. Flonyard's a strange place in that all the characters have animal features and that they conduct war in a very unconventional manner. In Flonyard, war isn't the typical dark bloody masscare of countries that are out to rip each other apart, but instead much more festive occasions in that can be best described as fun competitions that are athletic in nature and in which nobody dies. Aside from the typical "boy sent to fantasy world" deal, it's actually a pretty interesting, if strange, premise.

Now this seems like it would just be a goofy series in which nothing of note would happen and that plotless randomness would just take place for the whole run, but that isn't the case at all. As time goes on, a darker plot becomes apparent and the atmosphere does get serious at times. It's nothing extreme and you won't encounter any vile destruction going on, but there is some tension when it needs to be there. There's also quite a bit of emotion, particularly around the ending. It does have a bit of a Shounenish feel to it, but there's nothing really wrong with that and the last episodes are still touching regardless.

The interactions between the characters mean a good deal of bonding and it's nice to see a cast of characters that really like each other. Not too much animosity going on between characters, and while that means you won't have any shaky character relationships that could influence the story, the happier atmosphere of it all is a lot more fitting to this series in the first place. There are definitely some touching bits though, mostly between Cinque and the other characters but some others have their moments as well.

Can't forget about the music though. Aside from the OP and ED both being really good, I found myself enjoying the OST many times during the anime and it really made the series more enjoyable. And of course it must be said that the insert songs are amazing. Yui Horie has some great songs as always, and the upbeat mood of these songs is definitely appropriate for the overall mood of the series.

I had a fun time watching this and I really look forward to seeing season 2. Apparently a season 3 is also on the way so that's something I definitely want to watch ongoing if I manage to finish season 2 before then.
