So, could it be that yamato is the person behind spiral zetsu? I don't think he is being controlled but his actions are deliberate.
After all,
-He was used as a test subject.
-He didn't seem to be close to anyone.
-He didn't seem to have parents or they never cared for him.
-His abilities were constantly exploited because of his mokuton and he was considered as an imperfect clone of hashirama.
-When he was taken in root or anbu, perhaps they value him only for his mokuton.
-If he could not use mokuton, he would never have been alive.
-When he was caught, like i said before, his power was exploited by obito and no one ever came to his rescue. He was ignored and was irrelevant to the plot.
My guess is that he could have been convinced by zetsu. Zetsu could have told him his real plans and asked him to join him.
This is a farfetched theory but it might be possible.
