does the user expel chakra as they absorb it or do they store it in their body?

It's stored in their body. The amount of chakra one can absorb depends on the amount of chakra the user already has. For example, JJ Madara could probably absorb Naruto's TBB with Preta Path while Nagato probably can't, reason being Madara has a lot more chakra.

I'm pretty sure the databook states that it swirls the chakra the opposite way to negate the jutsu. But Nagato also used it to heal himself with the Hachibi's chakra, so.... idk.

Easy, it negates the jutsu by spinning the chakra that consists it in the opposite direction, and disperses that chakra within the Preta user's body.

I mean, depending on the user, yeah. Each Rinnegan user has had really large chakra reserves anyways, so it's not like that ever poses a problem. Nor is that really usable in debates so

Seems to make sense, but Nagato was shown to use multiple paths at once so I suppose he could use said chakra in conjunction with another offensive technique? That being said still doesn't mean it's limitless.

People don't have external chakra limits, so a beam of chakra that keeps on firing will keep on getting absorbed. The only problem would be whether or not there is a limit of chakra per time; such as if the laser had so much chakra the absorption couldn't keep up and eventually hits the person.

It would continue forever, the only reason it's not a viable counter to Narutos entire arsenal is that it doesn't absorb momentum or shock waves, which would both make it relatively impossible to maintain the barrier to absorb.

The barrier does halt momentum. Shockwaves, though it can't.

It seems like it is pushing against it, implying that a certain momentum would penetrate the barrier, all depending on the users ability to push the attack away.

That doesn't imply that at all and is completely conjecture. Preta halted pretty much every attack it absorbed.

They can absorb some type of chakra but if the attack is large and too fast that even the most powerful being in NV can not reach in time to absorb or can not absorb fast enough mean preta/absorb is kinda useless to use as defend.
There are type of chakra that absorb user can not absorb in large quantity is nature chakra because there are none preta user trained to become sage before.
