I think he does. That's why he ended it the way he did.
His other character had to have some spotlight, otherwise he would forever be in the shadow. He still is, don't get me wrong, but I think Kishi wanted to make it less so.
The character whose shadow cast upon the other never even tried, yet took the dreams of the other and denied him another of his goals.
So yes, I think Kishi definitely knew he was the best character.
