Unless I'm mistaken, I think it looks like ichigo's sword.

They're similiar in that rather than becoming something much much bigger like most other's Bankai, it compacts the power into a much denser smaller object. Byakuya makes some comment about it when Ichigo first reveals it. I think those types of bankai tend to be stronger overall.
