[Discussion] Does God punish those who break his ten commandments?

What is God's punishment for those who break these ten commandments? I'm an agnostic and I genuinely wanted to know. I was cleaning my bathroom and thought, "What happens to a christian person if they steal something...?".

My thought process is that if you steal, or murder someone, what is your judgement? Are you automatically doomed to go to hell? Is there a severity level of theft or is it any and all theft is punished? Is there a way you can cleanse your soul before you die that lets you go to heaven? If you can cleanse your soul and repent one of these commandments, what is the point of the commandments? Could you cleanse your soul of theft but not murder?

I'd really like someone to enlighten me.

P.S.: No trolling, flaming, or bashing religion.

Lesser commandments can be atoned for in life or purgatory. The mortal sins however generally cannot be.

I was raised Catholic, so pretty much you're going to Hell no matter what, unless you confess your sins to a priest. Personally, I could careless about that. Do what makes you happy. If you go to Hell for it, make sure it was worth your while

Idk dude. I'm just trying to figure out why someone would follow rules in place without knowing why they wouldn't do those things. I'm not saying stealing, murder, etc are good. However, why would I listen to some rules some man wrote in a book? It's like if you never met me irl, and I came up to you with some old ass book and said, "Here my son, read from this and live your life by these laws.", you're probably going to give me a dollar and keep it moving.

Rules are made to be broken because they're made solely for punishing. It's human herding, getting rid of the people that won't cooperate or follow orders and keeping the ones that don't think for themselves.

I feel life teaches you the lessons you need to learn, which may be gods way idk. But I know religion just teaches you to obey. Because like you said, what's the point of following any of it if you can just pray for forgiveness? What the point of sending someone to damnation if you forgive all things?
