Yeah it gets better, the current manga arc has alot of hype, and is easily the best so far. You'll enjoy it, just find yourself a good time to read/watch.

Now about the fan-service, it really shouldn't border you, i mean it's only there for like one 1second/panel, and we move on with the story. Problem? Nope, still great.

You're still at the start of everything. Also, the art wasn't that good at that time. Reason why i watch the anime instead. It will get better tho, try the anime then when you reach a wayy far point, read the manga.

I want to catch up fast so im just reading the manga. I'll go back and watch the anime after.

It gets good later on in the chapters. Fairy Tail was a slow starter for me but I liked it from the time I saw it cause of the humor. If you are the type who likes good fights and a bit of humor with plot. You will like this series. Of course its not for everyone.
