It can be overwhelming at first, but you get use to it. Especially when you read a lot of other different types of manga. It grows on you after awhile.

I know senpai is also used by students but I meant someone in the same field as you (be it school or work)
and yes -dono is outdated but still, just pointing it out
Senpai can also be used in school and that is then a person who is in a higher year. Kohai is the opposite - a student who is younger/in a lower year.
You also have -san, which is neutral. It can be used for people you don't know very well or don't know at all. It's polite, but neutral.
-Dono is an outdated term and is practically not in use anymore. If I remember correctly it was mostly used by samurai when they spoke about their master.
