Orochimaru and Kabuto formulated an hypothesis that in order to awaken the power of Rikudou, one need to combine the power of Madara and Hashirama. They even confirmed that Madara's Rinnegan was an testament and an confirmation of their hypothesis.

Just an loose opinion, I think Orochimaru and Kabuto recovered Madara's old body and modified him as said by Kabuto. Even Obito was shocked at this.


This could be why he pursued Sasuke's body.

Its possible Orochimaru knew that Sasuke and Naruto was the next in line for Ashura and Indra. Since Obito confirmed this information when he encountered Naruto during the 5 Kage Summit Arc.

He definitely wanted Rinnegan, obviously. And he wanted GodTachi's Tools too. He was patient and willing to wait an eternity for it. Which is one of the reasons he was obsessed with obtaining immortality.

However, upon realizing that all the remaining Uchiha's were stronger than him and that GodTachi has the Totsuka Blade and Yata Mirror. He was never going to obtain a Sharingan, or the Tools and gave up.

I think Kabuto being a Compatible Vessel wanted to carry out Orochimaru's will and eventually ended up fighting Itachi and Sasuke(Which was the perfect opportunity to obtain both the Spiritual Weapons and the Sharingan) However he underestimated his own power, and like Orochimaru and everyone that has seriously fought Itachi, he failed.
