I'd wager madara kills him "by surprise" after he outlives his usefulness prompting obito to use his last seconds of life (because a lot of characters die too slowly for their injuries) to enable someone else to defeat madara.

That's waaay to predictable, even for Naruto.
If anything, he should stay stale and die stale. He should keep his evil atmosphere and not have the 'change of good heart' scene right before he dies, let him stay evil
