Isn't it because he has more chakra? Samehada gives him more stamina to convert to chakra and by far that's all it does stated in manga. But a correlation? Possibly. Merged samehada needs water to swim rapidly fast so kisame possibly might've created water dome for this purpose.

Kisame can make extreme amounts of water even without Samehada. Kisame is one of the characters who has the most chakra and I am talking about him without Samehada. With Samehada it just becomes even crazier.

Kisame would still be able to steal chakra even without Samehada as shown when he was fighting Might Guy in their rematch.
