Why do we as a society not respect the homophilic tendencies of others? These people are called bigots, yet based on the definition of bigot(a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions) they themselves are being bigoted.


I believe we should support peoples homophilic tendencies to form a more cohesive society.

Homophily is a different thing though. Even in greek, oμοφυλία(homophily) is one thing and ομοφιλοφυλία(homophilia, homosexuality) is another. Homophily comes from homo(όμο-) which means "same" and φυλή(phily) which is something completely different from φίλος(philia). Φίλος(philia) literally means friend and as you said, the derivative -philia is used to show attraction and/or acceptance. On the other hand, Φυλή(phily) means race. Homophily basically means "same race" and states the desire of being close only to people of the same "race" as you. "Race" as in literally race, as in ideology or as in ethnic homogenity.

People naturally segregate and have racial tension. GO to any college or high school lunch room and see the natural segregation taking place. There are a few racial exceptions but they tend to have either assimilated culturally or have a common interest such as football, band, or cars etc.
