I have received an earlier ship date for February 9th to MCRD San Diego (Marine Corps Recruit Depot), point is, I have a handful of people who approve of my dedication and commitment to the US (I am aware some of you are not in the US on here) and that they respect my choices. I also have a portion of people who think it's wrong and it's just endless killing, tossing your life away to a government that is corrupted.

I do not argue with them because for one, I'm not much with politics, never was and never want to be. It's a whole different ball game, but I don't understand people who disregard our choices and see it as "wrong". People out there don't. Terrorism doesn't stop. People do things unforgiving. We are the ones made to put it to a halt.

I want an honest debate. Do you feel empathy for soldiers? Do you understand their commitment to protect others? I want to know your views NB. I'm curious.

I have little to no respect to them since the're just pawns in politicians' hands and nothing more. Guess I feel indifferent about them.

I'm joining the Air Force soon, but I need a letter from my doctor before I go to MEPS, I should be good to go after that though. I can understand you completely. People ask me the same questions and I really don't have any answers for them.

Just make sure when you go to MEPS that every answer they ask you is no, and when you ship out do not admit to anything or you'll get the boot. I'm sure your recruiter has told you that, also, the physical part in MEPS is very long so expect to be impatient like no other, and I agree. I really have no answer. I was told to just say "You're welcome for your freedom".

Shouldn't you respect that they are risking their lives for the up most dangerous things in the world. True, we maybe pawns, eh, yes and no I wouldn't 100% agree, but what if it were a family member of yours? Would you still feel pity for them?

I somewhat agree with this, as shitty as it is to say.

There are great, absolutely amazing people in the military who are the brightest paragons the world can put forth right now. But I also know people who are joining literally because they want to kill people, and that is pathetic.

Those people don't last long.

There are 3 types of people who enlist into the armed forces.

1). People who are looking for a career route

2). People who come from a lineage of military families

3). People who are psychologically messed up and join for the dumbest reasons, aka to kill people, blow stuff up etc.

The other reason I am personally biased, is because I know at least 6 kids (I can't in good conscience call them men) who are in the military, yet hate the government but are legally obligated to serve the commander in chief.

They live to serve a man that they despise, because of his political views and practices... how retarded can you get? You might as well join the Nazi's and tell people that you don't support Hitler... :|

Not really, I don't think I should respect someone for such thing as risking his life in XXI century.

If we lived at least 100 years ago - yes, that would be outta the question, but now I don't think that army is needed at all, if not for politics games. There will be no global war anyway. If there will be one, soldiers will be pretty much useless and we all will die in nuclear fire.
And I believe that all the local wars are scripted by the big countries' governments for different purposes (don't think they need to be listed for the're obvious).

True, we maybe pawns, eh, yes and no I wouldn't 100% agree, but what if it were a family member of yours? Would you still feel pity for them?

Don't get me wrong here: I don't respect soldiers as a social group, but only because I don't think that being a soldier is something special that worths respect. I can respect some of you as persons for something you did, individually.

And as for if it's my family member... I'm not sure how to reply to it. I live in Russia, and all the russians are forced to go to army for 1 year once we're 18 y.o. and have finished our study. That means I was a soldier myself. I definitely feel pity for those who are not suited for it yet being forced to be a soldier. But I, for example, really enjoyed it, it helped me to grow up and become stronger, both physicaly and morally.

And if we're talking about a situation when one decides to become a soldier on his own free will, there is absolutely nothing to pity, imo.

The pros and why I appreciate soldiers:

- makes you into a better man
- gives you a purpose (w/e it may be)
- one of the best way to show your support for your country
- make life long friends

Why I don't like them:

- many soldiers are high-school douche bags
- you have to do what the gov't tells you
- see people die
- may lose said friends

What ever your reasons I wish you luck and Thank You for your service

(hope you live long enough)

The last line made me chuckle.

What did the physical tests include when you went to MEPs? My friend told me a few things(he's shipping out to BMT on the 29th) about it but I just wanted to know what kind of tests they make you take.

I pity the soldiers working for tyrants and whimsical politicians. I respect the soldiers fighting for justice with justice.

Just basic physical tests to see if you're physically able to endure what you'll be doing.

They'll do basic hearing and sight tests. Basically like a physical you take when you go to the doctor but a lot more, and a lot more waiting. They will draw blood and test it for any diseases. They'll do a piss test etc. It's self explanatory.

They'll ask questions like "Have you ever broken any bones before?", "Do you smoke marijuana?", "Do you drink alcohol?". Basically you want to say no to all of that even if they offer a waiver and even if you have done those. From that point on you won't admit it throughout your military career or it will be considered fraudulent enlistment which the consequences for that is about a $150k fine and up to 4 years in jail plus dishonorable discharge.

We should attempt to empathize and sympathize with everyone, but I don't believe war helps. I'm all right with a defensive army to deter foreign invaders because I know that there will always be people who believe in war to push their agendas. I don't support getting involved in other peoples' politics, wars, and religions though.

Soldiers who are working on poor condition, harsh climate away from everything on border,I dnt even know who they are. It would be bad if I disrespect them while I live here in comfort because of them. Countless men have died in war to protect what of their country or empire whatever but it also saves people, people behind live on.

Don't know how the things are in US but in here we do respect them, most of them gave their lives to protect normal people like us although most people forgets it, what they've done for us won't just be memories for people like us .

I've been in the army almost five years now. I've been to Afghanistan twice. I don't give a flying **** about that country other than to do my job. I've never met a politician I liked or received any order from one. I've also never seen a person who *****ed about a problem do anything to fix it. I have a brother anywhere I go now. Next year I'll be walking away from my boys to take care of my own. Don't worry about any of these peoples opinions because good or bad they don't know what it's like to be drawn towards the warrior lifestyle. They don't know what's it's like to have a challenge bigger than the paperwork in front of them. They don't believe in the inherent duty some men have towards their country or the honor it brings to our families. They simply don't know.

Those who look down on the military will never have the courage to say that to a veterans face. I've seen it I experienced it. People have spoken to me out of ignorance not knowing what I was and I've seen the shame on their face when they learned. They're wrong and they know they're wrong. Let them type whatever they want behind a keyboard. When the world goes to shit it will be soldiers digging you out.

In this day and age, the military are pawns of governments to keep another country on it's toes or on the flip side, to ward off a goading country from attack. By having their cat's paws make their presence known in other conflicts, they are making as much of a statement of capability as those who outright goad.

In the World Wars and even the Cold War, the militaries had a worthy cause and the people that died fighting for a better world, for freedom, should not be bestowed with any kind of pity. Nowadays, there is no worthy cause; the countries that goad know that pursuing action would be foolish and dare not, leading the whole thing to be nothing more than a game. Unfortunately, it's a game which cost lives.

I wouldn't speak for all soldiers, but for the ones who are good human beings and the ones who enter with good intentions, it is a shame that they lose their lives for the sake of long-term divertissement.

1st to the OP, your are not a soldier. Right now you're a Marine Corp Recruit. Earn the Title then you'll be a Marine. Not a soldier.

You have all these people telling you your a pawn, but most of these people don't understand the idea of service. Quick to point out about this and that yet rarely get up off their back side to do something about it or come up with a decent solution to what they are complaining about. You'll be a pawn, but a pawn can become a king.

I respect any soldier, even the ones I fought against because at least they got the guts to stand up for a cause. A cause so great that they are willing to sacrifice their own life. Yeah their killers, but you have to have that mentality just to survive in combat. You have to be able to put your humanity aside at times and just go on training an muscle memory and hope that the nightmares aren't to bad when you switch it back on.

For those who fight for it, freedom has a special flavor the protected never know.
