I liked him I guess, but he was never significant enough for me to go crazy over. The whole first season was just to introduce the main characters and concept of the show, but the plot wasn't even part of it.

Zabuza's awesome. He had some of the best character development and one of the very few well written tnj. and was one the few characters I actually thought were ninjas. Naruto is a good character but he's not a ninja. However, Zabuza is the definition of ninja except for that huge sword, not good for an assassin..
