Maybe try the anime called "another", it's amazing anime

When i search similar anime as death note, most people says " Monster " but i don't know.
And also look the summarize of "Mirai Nikki", it's a bit like death note but i don't know too.

Mmm One Outs (baseball w/ strategy) and Kaiji (gambling) are two that involve things like tactics and mind games... only read manga so I dunno about the anime.

Monster might also be your thing. Not very action-packed but it has a certain air to it... Urasawa's cool like that (the guy made 20th Century Boys, Pluto, and Billy Bat what a beast)

Watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes it's basically Code Geass before Geass.

Man, I wish I could find an anime similar to Steins;Gate, too (my favorite anime) U_U lol

As for Death Note, yeah, aside from Code Geass, Monster is probably your best bet. Johan is probably the best villain in anime by far
