The way to enlightenment is long and steady. It's not a feeling, for feelings are just part of our being. Enlightenment is a state of mind. To be content with what is and what-not. It's foolish to cling onto false perceptions and feelings and wise to be conscious of what truly is.
You will need education, but not in the way teacher's often want you to. Good teachers show you the way, make nature and yourself your teacher and you will get there.
That, and breathing exercises, lot's of them... meditation....
hold right views, right intentions, speak just, act right and hold the right livelihood and right effort, mindfulness and concentration. You'll get there.
people suffer because they cling onto the ego, the idea of an self, and it makes them miserable(what else?)... to be able to see through this facade, you will feel liberated...
To stay on this liberated path will make you enlightened... You will take your time to process the world around you, instead of being another "sheep" in the flock.
Some famous people who I deem enlightened: The Dalai Lama, Mahatma Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Jesus, Lao Tzu, Mandela...
