He was an utterly useless addition to the series that did nothing but waste what little time the manga seemingly had before ending on Chapter 700.

It doesn't even make sense to give Gai such a flashback when he didn't even DIE after using the 8 gates. Would have rather seen more of Madara's skills as a Jinchuriki or had given his flashback time to Neji instead.
