The movies and gaiden are canon. The novels are not. Its not because I consider them canon. Its because Kishi considers them canon.
One thingIt's a subjective topic, but from most canon to least:
Gaiden > Boruto movie > The Last > Novels
Gaiden is basically 10 additional chapters to the original manga. Boruto movie was written by Kishi and some other guy, art by SP. The Last is written and animated by SP and just approved by Kishi. Novels are written by different authors but Kishi drew the illustations.
Kishimoto Interview said:Q: Before now, you have had experience with supervision and story in movie production.
Kishimoto: With Road To Ninja –Naruto the Movie– I dealt with the composition, and in The Last –Naruto the Movie– I did the character designs and was chief story supervisor. However, this is the first time that I’ve completely written everything from the start, including the lines.

Yeah. The Last is a complete shit except for the 15 seconds Sasuke scene. Only Gaiden and Boruto are canon.

Kishimoto stated himself that he was the 'chief story supervisor' for the Last. What-ever that entitles since I'm not big on movie production, just means what it means I guess?

Kishimoto was actually quite focused on this film, even incorporating things into his own marriage such as the scarf dilemma and other crap I don't remember.
I believe Kishimoto himself told them to rewrite the script to his liking (about 3-4 times) to his embarrassment. So that goes to show you that Kishimoto either helped or ruined their original image. I honestly can't tell.
