This thought just came to me, and I never realized it before, but Coby is like a little Akainu. It's just that people have a much more positive reception of him for one thing: his personality.
So Akainu is a hardcore marine who started cracking down on pirates because it was his job. They took a more offensive stand when he gained command and the pirate count went lower. People (some people anyway, I'm on of them) dislike him because he killed Ace, a really cool character and pirate. He was ambitious, wasn't selfish and was awesome. Some people still have him as their #1 fav. He's been called a 'bastard' a lot since then, and people are waiting for his ass whoopen to come.
Now Coby, as a little boy was a pirate. A pirate against his will, but a pirate nonetheless... until he was rescued by a pirate. You would think this would be like a popular moral that a lot of us are taught in real life: "Just because 1 (X) is bad, doesn't mean all (X)'s are bad", in this situation, X's being the pirates. But Coby took another route and decided screw that, I want to kill pirates for a living even though my life was saved by one and become the head of the marines. Not only did he become the force destroying pirates, but he specifically made it his goal to kill the pirate that saved his life. Now imagine if the story of One Piece took place a generation later than where it is now and he actually DID become the head of the Marines.
"Coby is the head of the Marines! When he was younger, he actually was a pirate... until his life was saved by one. Later on, he made it his resolution to kill that pirate to gain great status in the marines, and he did."
That's jacked up right? Now compare that to this generations head of marines, Akainu.
"Akainu is the head of Marines! He has always been a marine who's captured many pirates in his time, and accomplished the great task of killing Portgas D Ace. He then got the opportunity to take the head of marines and took had a battle for it."
Now when you compare the 2, Cobys really does seem a lot colder.
And think about it more, about what Luffy has accomplished. He's saved more lives than Coby has, rescued 1/4th of the world from complete corruption by pirates, East Blue, rescued the island of Alabasta, rescued a Sky Island from destruction, and saved Drum Island by restoring it's medics and overthrowing the corrupt king. See, isn't that a lot of good done by 1 boy? Wouldn't Coby be a bastard to for killing that man, without knowing all the good he's done, just so that he can gain some status?
Imo Luffy would be in no wrong here if he killed Coby, but I don't know how I feel about Coby. This is just my opinion though, had to voice this epiphany.
