A few days ago a girl in my country started to recive strange E-Mails from someone who said they wanted to pay her for ***. These messages continued untill she became so afraid (she was still at school, and she didn't knew who sent them to her), so she asked someone at her school to track down the sender. They did it, and it turned out it was a man who had hacked her computer when she downloaded a movie. Trough the torrent he managed to get complete controll over her E-Mails, Facebook, WEBCAM and all. He had controll over her pc, so you see... It's not good. Just a warning.

yeah, but she was just a bit stupid to open up all the gates with her torrents

starting a torrent opens up a few gates though which people can come in and execute little bits of code on you computer.
if someone would for instance install a trojan horse of something like that, one can control the pc.
but this is quite easily countered if you make you data streams encrypted.
also, report the damn guy of get help taking him down!!!
I've helped a couple of times with these kind of situations in the past.
one guy used to blackmail this girl with naked pictures of her but one little virus cleaned it all up (and destroyed, yes literally destroyed his computer, by simple overheating it at a certain time he wasn't home)

just find your local smart kid and pay him to conjurer up something to take him down like changing the drivers of the web cam and provide a virus driver or something like that

She needs to understand to learn to filter out torrent files to see which one doesn't contain malware.

That's why you only download from well known and trusted uploaders which can be found by the number of seeders. Movies and games uploaded by a user named extremezone are safe.

She must have had all the protection shut off (gates, firewall, etc.) Windows Vista and 7 are -what we call- "idiot-proof-systems" meaning everything is set up automatically, all the security, everything you need. So things like that can't happen to you. Even when you install your torrent programme it automatically adjusts to your security system. Now, if you're an idiot and you start mucking around with the settings and you have no clue what you are doing, that's another thing. Golden rule of ANY electronics: "If you don't know it, leave it!" Meaning leave the settings on default, don't open any ports (it will NOT make your downloads faster). If you have problems, go to a computer specialist. I mean a real one, not the cool kid from next door who downloads so much and is a "hacker". The problem was not the torrents, they are actually pretty safe. I have used torrents for years, never ever had a problem, never got a trojan. One more thing how you CAN get a trojan, virus, etc. is if you are using a bullsh*t anti-virus programme (like for ex. Kaspersky). Use NOD32. It detects, warns and quarantines automatically. Tells you where the malware came from and what was done with it, without you even lifting a finger. And don't mess around with stuff if you don't know what it is.

Sounds to me like she didn't know how to take care of her computer, and it's her own fault. I download torrents all the time, and I will continue to do so. Learn how to protect your computer or do not download illegal software/movies/music
