Do Guy and Lee hold back when fighting their rivals?

When Guy fights Kakashi does he not use the gates? Same with Lee, he talks abouts how he never beat Neji, does that mean he tried his best (no weights and 5 gates) to try and fight Neji? I understand that both Kakashi and Neji are great ninjas and are both prodigies/geniuses but the gates are very overwhelming for any ninja to handle alone, even with a sharingan or byakugan. I find hard to believe these guys always lose to their rivals.

Lee uses gates only when his pride/youth as a ninja is on the line. While gai only uses it to protect those who he cares about........

i think gai busted 3rd gate open to protect asuma & kurenai from the sandstorm

In a away i think they should until one surrenders Naruto and Sasuke did and look at how their competitive rivalry made them both strong
