So this past chapter made it clear that DNA had nothing to do with the Rinnegan, it was just the combined chakra of Asura and Indra in one vessel that caused the mutation. This means that just by getting Hashirama's cells stuck in him Sasuke can't get the Rinnegan, and also that does not exclude Naruto from getting the Rinnegan since he has neither Uchiha nor (full) Senju DNA (but this is neither here nor there, as I expect both of them to get the Rinnegan from the sage for the final fight). This also explains why Obito didn't get the Rinnegan from being injected with Hashirama's cells.
But my question is this: how in gods name did Nagato awaken the Rinnegan? He didn't have Asura's chakra (stated by the sage that Hashirama was Naruto's predecessor) nor did he have Indra's chakra (actually he might have had a little of Indra's chakra coming from Madaras eyes, but you get the point). Thoughts?
