This. I haven't read the comics, but I have read the Peter Parker wiki page many times, and while he was a teenager, it seemed to me like his happy-go-lucky attitude and personality serve to hide his true pain and feelings of ineptness. IMO, Garfield captured that well, while Maguire did not. The scene where Garfield arrives late then ends up saying "If my father is concerned with responsibility, why isn't he here to tell me that himself" displays the fact that Garfield captured Peter's attitude being another mask for pain. Garfield, IMO, caught the awkward quirkiness of Peter and sleek charisma of Spider-Man much better than Maguire did.
I agree with everything you have said and being a reader of the comics the director took it that route. They dive into his parents side of things and without spoiling you it's insanely accurate. I only see things like this from the X men films. (probably because it's the same director) Lol
