The Senju and the Uchiha are essentially the offspring of the Sage. Meaning that they are directly related to the sage. Later in the series, We learned that the Uzumaki wedded off one of its own to the Senju. Meaning that certain modern day Uzumaki are related to the Sage. (Possibly all of the modern Uzumaki depeding on how they bred)
Do you think that the Hyuuga could have possibly had a similar relationship with the Uchiha? They're have been allusions to them having some type of blood ties with them.
This is just me making a connection that may not be there, but the Byakugan is also one of the three great eye jutsus. Which seems out of place after learning that, for all intents and purposes, The Rinnegan is just a higher stage of the Sharingan.
The Hyuga is the clan we know the least about, with a close second being Uzumaki.
Looking at the image of the Elder son, we see that his irises are considerably pale.
We know that the sharingan is awakened after significant emotional struggle.
The Sharingan was "passed around" after this philosophy of the Curse of Hatred.
So this Hyuga eye is prevalent in people without emotional tendencies.
While the Hyuga eyes are speculated to be older than the Uchiha and for good reason (it took someone to sense and detect chakra in order to explain how to use it ), it's not far off to suggest their relations involved co-mingling.
The Hyuga, in conclusion, are passed on by having a lack of extreme emotional tendencies (explains the reserved, shy, quiet, calm, peaceful natures of Hyuga clan members).

Here are my thoughts... as opposed to a indirect "Marriage Only" relation (well... marriage being how they were folded in), I have two theoretical concepts. I took this from an old thread I made which had more to do with the Dojutsu being formed; however, you can take the Dojutsu to easily represent the clan members/family members.
Theory 1: Elder Son's Two Sons
One way the Byakugan and Sharingan could have derived from the Elder Son could come from he himself having two sons. The First Born Son was born with the Byakugan which represented the initial purity and love the Elder Son once had.

The Second Born Son was born with the Sharingan which represents the hatred and Juubi's corrupted influence.

The descenants of these brothers then forming the Hyuga and Uchiha clans. Due to Kakashi's strong point of saying that the Hyuga were the oldest clan in Konoha, it is likely that during the clan wars, the Hyuga were allies to the Uchiha, and with the forming of Konoha the Hyuga automatically joined....having formed as a clan before the Uchiha and plausibly the Senju, they are in fact the oldest clan.
Theory 2: Branching Descent Theory

Note that the Obito says descendants came to be called Uchiha/Senju.
Descendants is an extremely vague word that is open to interpretation. With this logic, this could mean there was any time from a few years to decades between the Sons of the Sage of Six Paths, and the forming of the clans. If there were many years between the Sons and their Clans forming, this means there is a possibility for the off branching of these bloodlines.
So if the Hyuga and Uchiha both come from the Elder Son, this is how it is possible. At some point along the line of descent, there was a branch off from the Elder Son's direct descent. For Example, say a female descedant marries some man, and then their child (who is also female), marries yet another man...this off branching dilutes the direct blood line which could have resulted from a mutation of the Elder Son's Dojutsu into the Byakugan. The less direct descent possibly leading to less influence from the Juubi's corruption, and as such the eye purified into the Byakugan.
The Uchiha on the other hand, stayed more direct, either from direct male ancestors, or simply preventing a dilution of the bloodline. With the Pride the Uchiha have, it would make sense that they would stick to this code. With a continued close bloodline, the Juubi's corruption manifested more strongly, and eventually gave birth to the Sharingan.
In addition to branching bloodlines, this is also another logical way in which the Hyuga could have formed earlier. With an unknown gap between the Elder Son and the Uchiha forming, there is a plausibility of the Hyuga forming first. Due to their common ancestrial herritage, it is logical that they had been in alliance with the Uchiha during the warring clan period. With Konoha being formed, the allies of the Uchiha and Senju naturally joined up, and thus...the Hyuga stand as the oldes clan in Konoha.
