Did Sai live up to his rank or a fail?

In the beginning it seemed Sai was very formidable and perhaps he was stronger than Naruto when they met but now we've seen no feats or anything from Sai. He was sent to kill Sasuke but he was nowhere his level yet he's an ANBU. Just like Sakura who started off well in part two ended up doing nothing ever since.

Finally in the ninja war he does something but besides that, not much am i right or wrong?

With kankuro's help, and deidara had no clay, and sasori had no puppets.

It's because he is a support character. If Sai was to do things by himself we could see just how effective he is.

Sai is only a support character. He was placed on team 7 as a spy for Danzo and to round out the team. However I feel he is at the same level as the others in Naruto's generation, if not stronger.

Sai is the perfect ninja at what he does. He could never compare with Naruto or Sasuke anymore obviously but Sai is an intel ninja. He can fly, he's stealthy, gain intel with little ink animals and can just also happen to fight. He's a spy more than a fighter. He is basically the closest thing to a 'ninja' as this show gets.

Kishimoto could've easily just abandoned the character like he's done with a lot of other characters but he gave him that cool moment against Deidara and Sasori that made him ridiculously badass and he's basically redeemed himself. Even though he hasn't had an actual 1-1 fight yet and probably never willll

He should paint powerful mythological creatures.
