No, Naruto didn't overreact. He probably also had it at the back of his mind that if he went soft on Boruto he would be misusing his power by favoring a relative. The Uzumaki name isn't tarnished either, it'll take a lot more than a frustrated 12 year old to tarnish the name of Mito, Kushina and a village that Konoha has deep seeded ties with. The Uzushiogakure vilage symbol is even emblazoned on the Jonin jacket armbands

The only difference is that Naruto was training and perhaps without that training he wouldnt be able to control Kyuubi chakra (against Neji) where Boruto doesnt train at all and he wouldnt be able to control the chakra the way Naruto did. While device , you dont even need training to use it.
