I just flicked through Kakashi Gaiden and thought about this deeper -

What if Minato mean't something more by what he said?

"It's a special kunai" - On the surface, he could just be referring to it's shape, but what if he mean't special as in, it has a special ability?

"When you get used to it, it's easy to use" - Could he have mean't that the FTG is easy to use....

Thoughts?

Teaching him FTG was definitely a possibility. But Kamui + FTG is literally the biggest over kill...

He has been made to seem a lot weaker in comparison with other high-ranking shinobi since Shippuden though...

Not necessarily. The first time he used it, was against Deidara, and he wasn't trained at using it at all, and it depleted him of chakra too fast. Against Pein, he was forced to use it for defence, as he was getting dominated. Against Sasuke, it was a last resort to avoid the arrow. Notice how he didn't directly use it against them, since they technically have no counter. Not to mention Obito, it's his technique, so there's no point on using it against him. Now is a different story though, he's skilled at it.

Possible and the magna has shown that others know the jutsu as well. It's not impossible to think he didn't.

Minato explained why it was special:

He had a few years to begin teaching FTG to Kakashi after that moment, but never did. I don't think he ever intended on doing so.

He meant you get used to throwing it its shaped differently. He gave him that so minato could protect them whenever. He may have wanted to teach kakashi but he never had time.
