They killed their best friends to obtain them, and as Izuna died after Tobirama slashed him, he obviously had it prior. We never saw Madara's prior to obtaining EMS either.

people forget that MS alone causes blindness and extreme pain with usage, MS techniques by themselves cannot be kept up constantly, and a fight between large groups of people that drags on for long periods of time it becomes pointless to keep using it
