Sasuke is what because of what he thniks and partly because of Itachi. However Its a plot to progress story further where it is now.

If you read old chapters, you will realize, itachi actually gave sasuke an inspiration to live. A motive which is to kill his brother(itachi) which is why sasuke became an avenger,
