Back in the day Itachi prevented a fight with Jiraiya by telling Kisame at best they would kill him but also die. From feats of Itachi it seems like Itachi could solo Jiraiya. So he must have lied to Kisame since they seem strong enough to beat Jiraiya 2 vs 1 from their feats.

Kishi probably didn't decide back then how strong Itachi was and such, or his motives. So it could be said to be a lie.

Not too sure...since Itachi was loyal to Konoha while being undercover in the Akatsuki and Jirayia being a loyal ninja in Konoha/one thing keeping the Akatsuki away from Naruto himself along with Itachi keeping the Akatsuki away from Konoha.

But I know for a fact

Jirayia>Kisame

Another reason of Itachi being loyal was how he didnt kill Kakashi. He could of as Kakashi states "Why didnt he just kill me.." .

This plus it was part one and Kishi wasn't sure about Itachi's strength... eg Kishi hadn't even started writing part 2..

yeah he lied, if both itachi and kisame had a full on fight with jiraiya, konoha wouldve have got destroyed regardless of the victor

he lied yes.. even if he meant it

jiraya is true ninja itachi without doubt admire he counted that jiraya would "stop" him about naruto.. and itachi played things so that sasuke were there too..

...probably it was because he respected Jiraiya unlike Orochimaru...

I don't think it was necessarily a lie. Itachi definitely wanted to avoid a battle with JIraiya, but Jiraiya also went toe-to-toe with three of the six Paths of Pain and won. I think that Itachi and Kisame could have probably beaten Jiraiya, but Jiraiya probably would have injured them pretty severely. He probably would have even killed Kisame.

Itachi vs jiraya would go either way, jiraya had sage mode, summons,( Gamabunta, mom n pops) who are also very good at genjutsu, plus his varity of techniques..
It be very high diffuculty for itachi n kisame.
Itachi also stated he dint wanna alert the anbu and start a war.

It was never stated NOR hinted anywhere that he lied. So no, he didn't lie.
I've only seen some itachi fanboys use "itachi lied" crap as an excuse to try to justify that he's better than jiraiya.
