Itachi said Madara was his mentor.
Madara spoke of a depressing world where you had to cast a lie in order to achieve happiness.
Itachi spoke of justice and reality to be possibly shaped by personal beliefs.
Sounds like Madaras plan was to shape a world of justice based on peoples dreams.
Sounds like Itachi was inspired by Madara, he was seen as a criminal, but really he could be seen as a hero. But then he also saw himself as a failure even if he tried to do good.
So he said what you percieve as right and true might be wrong.
Madara maybe told Itachi about his view, that reality is cruel, that it isn't worth it. And it inspired Itachi to build a lie about himself, to make Sasuke look like a hero, to give him a clear villain to defeat.
