So I was reading just now and stumbled across something that Tobito said.

Here, Tobito says "I'm sorry for deceiving you so long, especially since you were the one closest to "him"."

So what I thought was that Tobito was talking about this guy here which is the REAL Madara Uchiha

So my point is:
If Tobito was talking about the guy in the picture, then we can say that Madara's been in action since before that thing happened to Obito (4-5 years later), and that Hashirama didn't mess Madara up so bad that he had to be hooked up to the Gedo Mazou, and that it was just old age.

This May or May Not be relevant, but I just wanted to share my idea and find.

The debilitating effects of old age do not simply happen he might have lived longer if not for that battle. For some reason I though he was refering to Kakashi. It was just passing thought at the time that he still loves Kakashi even though he is frustrated about Rin's death, holding Naruto blameless and with great respect for the hot blooded youth.

He could've also used a Genjitsu on him to convince him that he was Madara, essentially being Genception, but that doesn't explain the long hair... unless we're under it too @_@
