I don't think a moral compass made any sense in Naruto. Obito killed plenty of people thinking it was for the greater good and so did Itachi, but we think of one as a hero and the other as a crybaby who couldn't get over his crush's death.
Itachi is a good boy for killing his parents and other innocent Uchiha's, while Sasuke is a bad boy for leaving his friends to avenge his families death. I doubt Itachi would consider himself a hero, but just as someone who made a choice and chose a side. I don't see why Kishimoto tried to drive such a fine line of good and evil in the show if there's so many shades of grey.
We think of Danzo as an anti-hero, but Madara as a full on villian regardless of the end goal of the two men.
