All opinions about fiction are subjective.

I'm glad you understand that. Many do not.

That doesn't mean that literary critique doesn't have it's place.

True, although it actually strengthens and sometimes validates your standpoint when you use data like I did. All I could make from your post was an incorrect definition of Deus Ex Machina and a line asking why people would like this event, automatically labeling it Deus Ex Machina without validating yourself and putting your opinion of it above everyone else's without a second thought.

And Deus Ex Machina is a bad plot device,

Subjective. I believe it is a good plot device. Most of the ones I have come across have been foreshadowed and inspired. Your negative opinion of it holds no more value than anyone else's positive opinion over it. Furthermore, I did not even regard this device as a deus ex machina.

and has been considered so for hundreds of years in literature.

By who? You? Oh yes, that's why soooo many renowned authors use it in an unknown number of renowned works of fiction.

Most stories don't employ it because it's cheap.

This is untrue. Again, if you wish to validate your statements, use data and references rather than subjective adjectives, assumptions and generalizations.

It removes tension, which is the most important factor in creating a compelling story.

For myself and others, it creates and exacerbates tension.

There is a difference between a good and bad twist.

There is no difference. They are both subjective.

A good twist is something that the reader didn't see coming, but still makes sense in the confines of the story. This is especially true in the climax. It is writing 101 that you don't intorduce new ideas in the climax of a story.

It is also in reading 101 that you write what you know and what inspired you. And that is not an absolution like you are making it out to be, but advice. People have become renowned writers worldwide without taking a single writing course.

it's bad form because it removes tension.

It's bad foryou because it subjectively removes your tension. Do not sit there and tell me what it does for myself and others just because you dislike it. It's very narrow and narcissistic.

This character litterally was introduced to give a bullshit explanation for Sasuke and Naruto to get new powers to beat Madara with.

Now you've lost all objectivity by using aggression and profanity in your statements, though I didn't regard you having much to begin with.

They didn't earn these abilities (Naruto through hard work, Sasuke through suffering) and there is no precedant for them.

Madara did not earn his abilities either. He lost so he stole Hashirama's cells to become stronger than him and in turn artificially manifested Hagoromo's powers and is using them to enslave the bijuus, the world and to become someone else. All the same, this too is subjective. As you said, Naruto and Sasuke worked and suffered for their abilities and skills. This can be interpreted as the reward for the culmination of that. Even further, you are again assuming. Assuming both of them will survive this battle, what's more the foreshadowed fight with each other.

They are simply brought in last minute to write Kishi out of a hole.

What hole would that be?

It's bad writing, and it's a **** you to the readers.

Then why are you the only apparent one having issues with it on the forum?

Using profanity and aggression as I stated does not validate your standpoint Infinite. It makes you come off as cornered and shaken towards your beliefs. You need to get over yourself and see the big picture. This is not your manga, it is Kishimoto's. He did not force you to read it and he is not obligated to write it in the manner a single person wishes. Critiquing it is one thing, but bashing he and the medium with profanity and aggression in place of data and objectivity just because it didn't go the way you wanted is another.

Kishi impressed upon us several times that Naruto had gathered the chakra of the 9 bijuu inside him. Summoning the sage was involuntary, just as was meeting minato and kushina. It's not that naruto had the ability to summon him, it's that Kishi has shown us chakra signatures being seen in between life and death. The sage is merely the third one Naruto has seen. This did not come out of left field because when naruto lost the chakra of Kurama, it was instantly confirmed he would meet the sage. Whether or not the sage would save him in real time or in between this life or death limbo, became the question.

It still comes out of left field. His parents make sense. They imprinted their chakra on him before they died. They did this for a utilitarian purpose. The sage doesn't even know this kid, past him being some "transmigrant" of his dead son. It's a reatcon that comes out of nowhere for the sake of plot.

Well, J.R.R Tolkien also coins the term eucatastrophe where sudden things happen to the main character to avoid their impending doom. I think that it makes up an important part of the fiction world. By using these terms in fiction, we buy in to the idea that in any circumstance, hope and goodness will prevail which is the theme of much fiction. So I guess for the sake of the theme, using certain devices is entirely okay.

Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest fiction stories ever written. I feel as if the free power ups from the Sage are a Deus ex Machina. However, that is no reason do disregard the device. Hope and goodness prevailing is the idea behind this device. I buy into hope and goodness. I buy in to a happy ending. I buy into a positive theme. I buy into Deus ex Machina.
