Why didn't Madara and Obito wipe out the alliance instead of going for "the mind". I know it's plot but it's seems kinda strange because they could just wipe out the alliance easily and be done with it instead of wasting time attacking Shikaku and the others.

By wiping out the "mind" they leave the alliance in chaos. Or that was the idea anyway.

Also if they fired right at the alliance they'd be in the blast radius of the bijuu dama as well.

I'm sure there are other ways to kill them with one shot. The Jubi is a god..
