I don't think it's truly mindless, Kurama may have described the primordial state of Juubi as mindless/emotionless but I believe the Juubi did develop a consciousness over the eons, and that the Juubi during Rikudou's era was a sentient/intelligent creature (because if it wasn't the case, why didn't it attack humanity before Rikudou's era?)

It's a logical impossibility for them to be descendants of the Senjus, for one thing they live in an entirely different country (Land of Whirlpools) not to mention their complete apathy to the First Shinobi World War (they only allied with Konoha later on when it was founded) and there was no mention of the Uzumakis descending from the Senju Ancestor:

From a plot logical standpoint and from a literary symbolic standpoint, it's absolutely impossible for the Uzumakis to have descended from the Senjus, quite the contrary, the apical ancestor of both Elder and Younger Sons was an Uzumaki: Rikudou Sennin.

Ninshū was supposed to be used as a method of peace but it became a tool of war (accdg. to Jiraiya) and Rikūdo's era was an age of endless war much worse than the Shinobi wars, I think the wars during Rikūdo's era triggered its hostility to humans.
