Er, why would Orochimaru make himself an even greater target for a bomb he likely assumes is nothing more than an upgraded C3? He has no reason to even resort to the Eight branches in such a scenario, given his lack of intel.

8branches is the ultimate jutsu achievable by the user of white snake power. Considering we've seen Oro's regeneration being really impressive in his human form, 8branch is bound to posses even more impressive feats in that area, enough to tank the normal explosion impact considering he doesn't know C4 doesn't work like that. But anyway, he tanks both.
Or he simply merges with the ground.

Orochimaru isn't tanking C3, nor is he putting in place safeguards against a Jutsu he doesn't have intel on (C4). At best he'll attempt to avoid or elude the blast of something like C3 via his Attack Prevention Technique or the like, but he certainly won't be reacting to C4, which he cannot see. The bombs'll enter his system and he'll be completely annihilated.

I've already explained how 8branches survive C4.
But if you really insist on that he doesn't go 8branches, his Attack prevention Technique saves him as well. C4 didn't destroy trees, didn't affect ground or stuff. It's obvious Oro seeing such a big, explosive thing would go really defensive.

Some bizarre appraisals, none of which seem to consider Orochimaru's inferiority to C3. It's the a game ender, frankly. Clearly, Deidara holds the upper hand by virtue of being a strong long-ranged fighter. He'll pretty much pen Orochimaru against the wall whilst keeping himself out of harms way.

You seem to forget that C3 needs prep time and that Deidara doesn't start on his bird. Setting up all this with Oro on his back wouldn't be that easy and considering we've seen Oro attack with his Kusanagi at some impressive speed, then even if Deidara manages to fly off the ground, his bird is getting impaled and brought down at no time.
