Defining "Base"

Couple of days ago, I asked what is considered "base" around here and the answers, to be polite, surprised me. It was said to me that Base is the character without any kind of power up whatsoever. Sure, it makes sense ... if the power up comes through unnatural means. I asked if, for example, Gai's Gates and the special eyes (Sharingan, Byakugan, Rinnegan) were not considered base, to which the reply baffled me.

How come that the dojutsu that's naturally earned by certain clan members is not base? Or the gates that the eyebrows duo learnt to open through sheer training? Is the bijuu power also not considered base? What is Naruto without Kurama?

To be honest I believe base should be considered the stuff that a character naturally earns through his life cycle and doesn't "steal" or "borrow" from someone or something else. For example, Madara's sharingan would be base, his rinnegan (or EMS for that matter) or mokuton wouldn't (stole mokuton from Hashirama, and used his powers to awaken the rinnegan).

Anyways, what should really be considered base?

Base essentially means how you are normally from day to day. If you want to picture a character at Base, think about how they would be if they went shopping or just woke up.

IMO Sharingan counts as base since that's their normal eyes.

A shinobi also needs to activate a jutsu. If this rules out Sharingan, all jutsu that aren't Taijutsu are ruled out of base.

The definition of base differs from person to person and it is pretty much normal skills of a shinobi without additional boosts such as SM for Naruto and gates for Lee/Gai.

Well Itachi, Sasuke and Obito have been shown to casually have on their 3 Tomoe, since they can casually keep it on, it should be considered part of their base.

Base is pretty much no power up, gate for example is not base, even I'm not sure if doujutsu is base, but preferable not, for someone like Itachi who seemed to have his Sharingan activated every time, or Nagato who only had renningan eyes, how would their base be described? I just differs from character to character I think

sharingan isn't base, if it is base then SM could be considered base, going by your logic. Plus all uchiha never unlock it to begin with, any time you turn something on be it sm or sharingan or gates, you've officialy left base mode.

Ok, so most are saying "no power ups" ... cool, isn't the Bijuu a power up to a Jinchuuriki? Isn't the Sharingan a power up to the Uchiha (not all of them awaken it) and whoever borrows it?. Pretty much anything short of regular ninjutsu wouldn't be considered base by that definition of power up.

BTW, the "going to sleep with Sharingan to be considered base" is quickly overthrown by "going to sleep with Mokuton" Madara or just by Kakashi's sharingan, which he cannot deactivate.

Mokuton Madara has a limited amount of senjutsu inside of him, Kakashi cannot go to sleep with his sharingan activated as it would drain his chakra until he dies.

Ok, but even without Bijuu mode, Naruto's chakra is being augmented by Kurama all the time (one of the reasons he could learn Senjutsu at all), so we cannot even fathom a Base Naruto since all we know about him has been done with at least some Kurama's help

And that's why he covers his eye altogether. If he could activate / deactivate at will, he wouldn't need the headband.

Uhh no, Sharingan is something every Uchiha is born with, but they need to awaken it. It's natural, SM isn't.

So are the gates, and not the Uchiha alone, every single shinobi is born with them, they just need to know how to open them.
