Has anyone else heard of this series?
I guess the best way to describe this is like D.Gray-man meets Phoenix Wright? Really weird combination but it works surprisingly well. Granted, the Phoenix Wright aspect is limited to the early parts of the manga and only a little bit in the later half.
Basically, the main character is Kucabara, a demon prince who was exiled from the demon world and lost his powers. To get his powers back and return, he and his assistant work to find souls that are sentenced to hell in order to prove their innocence. By doing so, he is able to obtain the Dark Matter that supplies his energy. As the story progresses, more about Kucabara's past and his life in the demon world are revealed and the focus of the story changes over time.
Personally I enjoyed the lawyer aspect of the story most. It was a really interesting take on Shounen action that I've hardly seen from other series and it was quite entertaining to see how it all played out. As it goes on, the story focuses a lot less on it and goes more into the Shounen battle with demons type of thing. This isn't necessarily bad as it allows for awesome fights and some interesting plot twists, but for me it still wasn't quite as great as seeing Kucabara solve mysteries while fighting off shinigami. Without the lawyer aspect of it at the forefront, the story starts to lose some of its individuality and starts to feel more like a typical action manga.
That said, it's still a fun read and the character development's not bad for being a 10-volume action manga. If you like action Shounen series and you have time to spare, it's not a bad one to try out.
