The Queens Make Contact

“In other news, 27 year-old Naomi Misora is reported missing after last being seen two days earlier. Formerly employed in the American Federal Bureau of Investigation, she is reported to have resigned three months before her disappearance…”

As her image emerged on the screen, I took me only a fraction of a second to recognize her.

"…Damn it. That’s likely to cause problems."

"Hm?"

"That’s the woman that Light was speaking with a few days ago. If she’s an FBI agent, even formerly, that’s bound to catch L’s attention. …He might even recognize her."

"Huh? Uric, come on. You’ve gotta admit that that’s an awfully big leap. How could she have possibly known L?"

"I admit it is a leap, but…L’s flourishing career has seen his skills used by several countries over the years, not just Japan. …Now that I remember correctly, he did work with the FBI four years ago, in what’s now known as the Los Angeles BB Murder Case. Had he known her then, he surely would’ve remembered her exceptional deductive skills and believed that she found some sort of lead, which, considering her disappearance at Light’s hands, had to have been what occurred."

"Yeah, but even then, how would that information point back to Light? …Come to think of it, how did she even find out that the Death Note uses killing methods other than heart attacks? Something would’ve had to have happened that brought that to her attention in the first place."

"…Something, …but what? …Gimme a minute, Shahim."

Resting my chin on my compressed hands and closing my eyes, I released any tension in my body as I sat on my bed with my legs crossed, letting all the information I had gathered flow through my mind.

"…Alright. So far, …the only thing that could’ve possibly led her to make that assumption was…the bus-jacking. Light killed that man with an accidental death, so that it would go unrecognized as one of Kira’s killings, all in an effort to make the FBI agent that was following him reveal his name. She could’ve easily heard about it on the news, but…that wouldn’t be enough. She must’ve known that the FBI agents were in Japan and that one was on that bus tailing someone, but all the agents in Japan were killed by Light, so she might’ve been their superior or someone else. …No. That can’t be it, since she resigned not too long before any of this occurred. …In fact, she shouldn’t have even known that the FBI was in Japan, since they wouldn’t have given her that information, even if she was formerly employed with them. But, …how else would’ve she have known that agent? …Is there even some other connection I can make? …Wait…that’s it!"

Opening my eyes and letting my back fall onto the bed, I shared my analysis with Shahim.

"She knew the agent that was following Light personally. It couldn’t have been a friendship, because that’s not a good enough connection for him to feel comfortable sharing that info with her. Even if they used to work together, I highly doubt he would’ve taken that chance, since anyone he met could’ve easily been Kira, even those closest to him. So, …it had to be someone that he knew with absolute certainty wasn’t Kira. And it would have to be someone that had a very good reason to come with him to Japan, so the only thing she could’ve possibly been…was his wife…or, at the very least, was soon to be his wife."

After going through my deduction one more time, I smiled in satisfaction, both for the near certainty of my correctness…and out of pride for my own deductive skills. It took a minute or two for Shahim to even come up with a reply, but he eventually came to.

"…Whoa…that-that has to be right. …But, what does that tell you now?"

"Hmm…once L is informed of this connection, he’ll immediately lower his number of suspects down to those that that agent was following. …And considering they were primarily instructed to follow both Japanese police and their loved ones, that’ll probably factor it down to only two or three families, one of which…is the Yagami’s. …As for what action L will take once he comes to the same conclusion, …my guess is…home surveillance, since there’s now only a couple of homes in which Kira could possibly reside."

"Ooooh, …hehehehe, I wonder how Light’s gonna squeeze out of that."

"…So do I, Shahim. …So do I."

Regardless of how Light intended to do this, there was now virtually no way for me to keep track of his movements, so I let it rest. Besides, the college entrance exams were two weeks away and I had to begin my studies. …Mom and Dad would’ve wanted that. I formed the Sign of the Cross over my chest, praying that God still cared enough to shield my actions from their eyes, knowing how heartbroken they must be…to find out that their son was the initial cause of the one hundred or so deaths that have recently occurred in the world they left behind.

The days leading up to the exams felt as if they had lasted forty-eight hours rather than twenty-four, but I was grateful when they had finally passed. Putting on my regular attire and grabbing the Death Note, a pack of spearmint gum, and two of my lollipops, I headed out to the university approximately one hour before the exams were to begin, arriving there thirty minutes early. Sitting in the very back of the large room, I adjusted my seating in order for me to cross my legs in my chair, taking a moment to look around the room once situated.

"Look at them, Shahim. You can almost see the fear in their eyes and the tenseness in their muscles."

"And you don’t feel either of those?"

I chuckled at the remark, making sure to keep my volume low as I continued chatting with my Shinigami.

"Not in the slightest. Disregarding my casual appearance, Shahim, academics have always been the least of my troubles."

"…Hmph. You’re one of the smartest humans in this world, yet you were hoping to be a lowly detective someday. Hehe, what a waste of talent."

"…Quite the opposite, actually."

"Hm?"

"All in due time, Shahim. …This break from tracking Light’s activities has actually given me plenty of time to think ahead on my plan…and I’ve almost certified exactly what my agenda will be after Light and L are dead."

It wasn’t too difficult to read his thoughts at this point, so I simply answered the question he was already intending to ask.

"Not here. When the time comes, I’ll be sure to clue you in-"

I brought this conversation to a halt as I heard Light’s footsteps outside the door. It seemed that he was talking with his own Shinigami at the moment.

"Alright, get out of here!"

"Huh?"

"At this point, I can’t allow any sort of contact between you and Light’s Shinigami. So, just wait outside or something. Quick!"

Letting a sort of growl escape his throat, Shahim did as I asked, though without leaving me with a threat of his own.

"Alright, I’ll just head back to the house. But, don’t expect to find any cookies when you get back!"

While he disappeared through the wall of the building, I smiled in amusement as Light entered through the doorway. My smile quickly disappeared as we made eye contact.

"Hey, Uric. How long have you been here?"

"Eh, about half an hour. And look at you, showing up ten minutes early. I never thought I’d live to see the day."

We both got a good laugh out of this.

"Yeah, well, I got a head start today. And here you are without gum or a lollipop in your mouth. What are the odds?"

I shook my head as another amusing smile reemerged across my face.

"…Touché. So, are you ready for this?"

He shot me a reassuring look.

"Are you?"

I gave him the same treatment.

"Well, that settles it."

"Excuse me, you’re going to have to take your seat now. The test is about to begin."

"Hmm, right. Good luck, Uric."

"…You too."

The exams consisted of one hundred questions and lasted the same number in minutes. At my calculations, it wouldn’t even take me half that length of time. At this point, I was simply skimming through the pages.

"…Easy…easy…easy…tricky…tricky…easy…easy…difficult…easy…easy…easy…easy…"

Once I had completed the majority of the test, I purposefully marked the last three questions wrong. Hopefully, that was enough to ensure that I wouldn’t have to give that generic speech on the first day of college. Afterwards, I handed my exam in to the instructor and left as I came, only without a Shinigami by my side.

"He better have left at least one of those damn cookies."

Three months later, I made my way over to the university again, this time as one of its new students. Shahim, who was little more than indifferent about the ordeal, merely stood over me as I sat on the steps of the main building.

"So, where do you want me to hide today, huh?"

"…Anywhere that Light’s Shinigami can’t see you is fine. I’m not gonna ask you to fly home today."

"Hm? Feeling confident, are we?"

"…I guess you can say that."

After fifteen minutes of utter boredom, we were finally allowed inside. Taking my seat next to Light in the front row, I sat idly by as one mind-numbing speech was given after the other.

"Ugh, …this must be what a Shinigami feels before he decides to drop a Death Note in this world."

"So, did you well on the exams?"

Surprised, I looked beside me to see Light in wait of an answer.

"…Yeah, of course. I missed a few questions, but that was just to prevent myself from ending up as one of these idiots, …no offense."

A chuckle followed this remark, as did a reply.

"None taken."

"…So, I heard you got a perfect score, huh?"

"Yeah, I guess. Don’t give me too much credit, though. I can’t stand that."

"I know the feeling. …I also heard that someone else scored perfect on it, but I don’t-"

"And now for the Freshman Address. Freshman Representative Light Yagami…"

"Yes."

"Knock ‘em dead, Light."

"Would it kill you to improvise it a little, too?"

"…and Freshman Representative Hideki Ryuga."

"Uh, here."

Looking beside me to see who had answered the call, I was left in utter surprise by the person my eyes were now set on. …It was as if I was looking into a mirror. Untidy, lazy appearance, not to mention an odd way of sitting, Hideki Ryuga appeared to be the living embodiment of the phrase “hidden genius”, because absolutely nothing about him screamed of intellect.

"Well, I suppose I’m not the one to question such style, …but it’s still so…bizarre."

I couldn’t possibly explain what it was at the time that caused me to think in such a way, but the more I thought about it, …the more his name didn’t seem to fit his person.

"What the hell am I talking about? There are millions of people with names that don’t suit their image, so what makes his name so much more difficult to accept as genuine? …It would make much more sense if he at least bore some similarity in appearance to the actor Hideki Ryuga, but that statement would be incredibly strained at the most. …Besides, what would make him use an alias in public, anyways? The only people that would need one are criminals that have yet to be caught or detectives that are after Kira. …I can’t imagine a criminal posing as a college student, especially one that was capable of making perfect scores on the exams, so he would have to be a detective, but even then, that one piece of information would basically limit the possibilities down to…no. No, that’s impossible. Why the hell would he be here, …unless…"

Breaking out of my trance, my moment of insight caused me to miss the entire address, as well as the moment of applause my fellow students gave to the speakers. The only thing on my mind now, though, was…what to do with the information I now had. While Light and Hideki returned to their seats, I was still lost in thought and it wasn’t until I heard the faintest sound of verification in my speculations that I opened my eyes in surprise.

"I want to tell you I’m L."

Every other sound in the room suddenly became increasingly distant, while every muscle in my face and neck worked to prevent me from turning my head in curiosity.

"…So, it’s true. …The two queens have finally made contact. I wonder if…no. This is Light’s battle right now. I’m merely a spectator…and that’s all."

When the ceremony ended, I returned home without hesitation, stepping through my front door twenty minutes later and turning to Shahim for one last piece of confirmation.

"Shahim."

"Hm? What is it?"

"Hideki Ryuga, …Light’s fellow speaker at the ceremony, did you see his real name?"

Surprised as usual, he merely went along with it this time.

"Oh yeah. …Hehehe, yeah, I saw it."

"So, it was an alias."

"Oh, hands-down. What made you think so, though?"

"…Just a feeling. Anyways, I don’t need to know what his real name is. …I already know exactly who he is."

"Hm? Do tell."

"…He’s L."

I was halfway up the stairs when Shahim’s lack of response caused me to turn back in confusion. He was obviously as stunned by the revelation as I was.

"…Whoa. Hehe, now that’s a game changer if there ever was one. What would he be doing there, though?"

"He must’ve been there to confront Light head on."

"But, why would he do that?"

"Quite simply, …because he had nothing to lose. …Even if he told Light that he was L, that wouldn’t be enough for him to kill him with the Death Note later on, since he still needs his name. And, in the off-chance that he was killed, that would immediately bring Light to the rest of the Task Force’s suspicion."

Making my way into my room, I walked up to the chessboard and took the black queen in my hand.

"That was a very clever move on his behalf."

I immediately moved it to the middle of the board, so that it was situated directly across from the white queen.

"In this position, there’s absolutely nothing for Light to do. Even if he somehow takes L out, look behind the queen."

Sitting beside the black queen, mirroring the position of the white one, …was a black pawn.

"It’s a trap. If L dies here, Light will soon follow, so…"

I moved the white queen a few spaces to the left.

"…he has no choice but to retreat, which, in turn, allows L…"

Taking the black queen in hand again, I moved it diagonally across the board, until it made contact with the white, king-side castle, removing it from play.

"…to do that…and with the surrounding pieces in no position to counterattack, L gets away with it."

"Aaah. But, what did that castle represent? You said before that they represented anything that had to be done for the queens to take each other out."

"…You’re right. And it represents…the contact between the two queens."

"Hm? But how?"

"By showing his face, L has also brought Light one step closer to killing him for good. By now, Light’s beginning to develop a false sense of security in his impending success, which will make him all the more careless with his actions from here on out. He thinks he’ll find a way to earn L’s trust in the end, but we both know that’ll never happen. So, in result, they’ll continue to get closer, and the more Light becomes involved in L’s investigation of him, …the more risky that actually killing L will become…and the more likely it’ll be that when they finally do collide, …neither will survive."

"Ooooh…this is getting rather exciting, I have to say."

"Indeed. And the fact that Light is most likely L’s only suspect right now makes it that much more dangerous for him down the road. …I set Light up to die six years from now, but…at this pace…L is going to die long before he does. That only leaves us one question."

"And what’s that?"

"…Where and how will Light meet his demise when the bell finally tolls? …I think the answer will be rather surprising…for the both of us."
