Alright, this one’s a bit longer than I would’ve hoped for and it probably could’ve been better written, but L makes an actual appearance next chapter, so I think that makes up for itxd Enjoy:)

The Knight

Despite the recently discovered presence of FBI agents in Japan, my current lack of involvement in Kira’s ordeals allowed me to continue my daily routine in peace, though I did proceed to move another black pawn two squares out from its starting position, signifying that L had made yet another move, although a risky one at that. Light had undoubtedly discovered this, as well, so it wouldn’t be long before all of them were dead. Light had been rather careless at the beginning of this entire plot, but I knew that he wouldn’t dare kill just one of the unknown number of agents currently residing within the country, for that would draw too much unneeded attention to him and the others being tailed by his stalker. But, as I expected, an unfortunate news broadcast the following Saturday managed to certify my faith in him.

“Just this afternoon, at 11:31 a.m., a shuttle bus bound for Space Land was hijacked by Kiichiro Osoreda, a suspect for an attempted bank robbery that occurred two days earlier. After demanding all of Space Land’s income from the previous day, he was reported to have suffered from hallucinations that prompted him to empty his firearm of its ammunition. Shortly afterwards, at exactly 11:45 a.m., he ordered the driver of the bus to bring the vehicle to a halt, afterwhich he ran out into the middle of the road and was immediately struck by a car. The paramedics reported him dead upon their arrival-”

I didn’t wait for the rest of the report before shutting it off. I already knew exactly what had happened.

"Well, it seems Light is getting along rather well."

Shahim, standing nearby as he always was, immediately questioned my reasoning, as he always did.

"What makes you say that?"

"I’ve been keeping track of local criminals for a while now, in order to keep a record of Light’s actions, and I remember hearing about that attempted robbery. There’s no way that his death could’ve actually been an accident, given the timing. …If Light managed to find out about the FBI, as well, then he surely would have formulated a plan to figure out his stalker’s name. I’m pretty sure this is what he came up with."

I smiled at my next thought before making it known to Shahim.

"Odds suggest that he likely used an alibi that would’ve given the agent no choice but to reveal his name. …If I had to guess, he probably told him that he suspected him of being the man’s accomplice, which would have forced him to give Light his FBI badge as a means of identification. In fact, …I can almost guarantee that that’s exactly what happened."

"Ooh, it seems that your friend is a bit of a sly fox, isn’t he?"

"…Indeed he is. He still has to find out the rest of the agents’ identities, as well, before he can kill the one that was following him, but…I’m sure that’ll be taken care of within the next week or so."

"…Sounds like a decent estimation. So, what are you gonna do now? It looks to me like he has everything under control."

"…True, but curiosity is a very powerful impulse, Shahim. I’ll be keeping watch over his actions as long as it’s possible. But, in the meantime, …how about another batch of cookies?"

"Oooh, please do!"

Just as I had predicted, a little more than a week after the bus-jacking occurred, my own stalker was nowhere to be found. It seemed that Light had successfully lived up to my expectations, …at least for now.

"Yeah, but he still could’ve been ordered to follow someone different, right?"

I almost chuckled at the question…and the answer I was to give it.

"Yes, but every day since we first noticed him, I’ve been casually looking over my shoulder every time that I went inside my house. That alone would’ve given him reason to report back to his superior that I was projecting suspicious behavior, which, in turn, would’ve given his boss reason to tell him to keep following me long after the rest of the agents were sent to spy on different people. And since I tore out the only page of the Death Note that I wrote on, it would appear to be nothing more than a regular notebook if anyone saw it, so absolutely nothing in the world would’ve given the authorities reason to suspect me, had they gone ahead and searched my home, that is."

"…You did that just so your stalker would stick around long enough for you to confirm that Light killed him and his fellow agents?"

"Yeah, why? …And if it has something to do with risk, keep in mind exactly what I’m attempting to do here. I’m trying to keep anyone else in the world from ever suffering the same punishment that I face for using the Death Note, and doing it by removing anyone that would ever be worth killing with it. …Despite my overall good intentions, those who truly stand for justice will never see it as anything other than murder. It’s the reason I kept this plan a secret…and it’s the reason why my life is at risk everyday that I continue to carry it out."

"...Damn, you talk way too much at times, Uric."

"…Yeah, I suppose that’s true. So, what will happen now that Light’s disposed of the FBI?"

"…Well, for one, he’s going to have to go back over his actions over the last week, in order to ensure that he left nothing out. On L’s end, …by now, the friction between him and the Task Force will have nearly boiled over."

If there was ever a moment in our acquaintanceship that I could pinpoint as the moment that Shahim reached a new level of confusion, this would’ve been it, because I completely lost him at this remark.

"Hold on a second! How the hell do you figure that!?"

It was almost funny, to be honest, but I managed to keep a straight face as I answered his numerous questions.

"Think about it, Shahim. L’s legacy as a detective arises from the fact that he’s never had to give away his identity or location at any point in his career. In other words, he’s never had to risk his life for a case once, while police officers and detectives do it every day. With that said, imagine their reactions when they discover that L hired the FBI to follow them and those closest to them. Not only will they begin to rethink their own safety, but they’ll also start reconsidering their trust in L. Such conflict will only lead to one outcome."

"And what’s that?"

"…L’s gonna have to come out of hiding…and work with them side-by-side. That’s the only way that they’ll be able to trust him now. And once he’s out in the open, Light will be one step closer to finding out who he really is…and getting rid of him for good."

"Hehehe, interesting. So, when do you think that’ll finally happen?"

"…At this rate, …L will be dead long before Light’s six years are up. But, I can’t truly know that for certain, so who’s to know?"

While I continued speaking, I walked over to the chessboard and moved the white queen diagonally to take out the pawn I had moved earlier.

"Besides, right now, Light and I have more important things to worry about than the distant future."

Once my previous move was done with, I also moved the queen-side, black knight out into the middle of the playing field.

"That piece may come into play soon."

The night was surprisingly peaceful. For the first time in weeks, I found myself able to sleep with absolutely no sense of worry or despair, …something that sickened me. I was the last person in the world that should sleep so soundly, especially after all that I had done. When I woke up that morning, for reasons I am still unsure of, I felt provoked to check on Light’s progress…first-hand. I had to know whether or not he had left anything out when he set out to kill the FBI agents. …I would later prove wise to do so. Pulling out my cellular phone, I called the one person whose number I still had and used.

“…Hello?”

"Hey, Light."

“Oh. Hey, Uric. How’re you doing?”

"Eh, it’s the same as always, I suppose, though I do feel unusually bored at the moment. What’re you doing right now?"

“Oh, my father pulled an all-nighter, so I’m bringing him a spare change of clothes. Why, did you want to do something later on?”

"...Well, I’m never sure what I want to do, but I suppose that sounds better than nothing."

He managed a chuckle at this.

“Yeah, I guess that’s true. Sorry, man. I’ve been a little too busy lately. Once we’re in college, though, I’m sure we’ll have all the time in the world to hang out.”

"…Yeah. Alright, I figured that I’d try, anyways. …Take care, Light."

“Yeah, …you too.”

Hanging up the phone and placing it back in my pocket, I stood up off my bed and grabbed my shoes and sweatshirt, much to Shahim’s confusion.

"Going somewhere?"

"…Mmhmm. I have to make sure that he left nothing to chance. …Oh, and Shahim?"

"Yeah?"

"…I need you to stay here."

It would appear that this sort of request was the last thing he expected, because he didn’t take it lightly.

"What the hell are you talking about? It’s not like I can just leave your side-"

"If Light’s Shinigami sees you, then everything I’ve done up until this point will have been for nothing. I don't have…You know, I’m not bringing any of the cookies with me."

This argument had been won. There’s no way that Shahim could resist such an opportunity.

"Oh! Alright, by all means, but make it fast. I’m supposed to follow you wherever you go."

"…Fair enough. …Oh, and try touching one of the chess pieces."

"…Alright?"

Doing as I asked, he managed to successfully grab ahold of one of the pieces, looking back at me to hear my reasoning, immediately afterwards.

"Okay, so what was the point of that?"

"I may end up asking you to move some pieces for me while I’m gone."

Walking over to my closet, I pulled out two walkie-talkies and handed one to Shahim.

"What’s this for?"

"They may look like toys, but they actually have very long range. The police station is only four miles away, so we’ll be more than capable of keeping in touch with each other. Just hold the button on the side of it to talk through it. They’re already on the right channel, so make sure that you don’t do anything else to it. …Alright, I’ll be back within the hour."

Taking a moment to memorize the positions of all the pieces on the chessboard, I headed downstairs and out the door.

After about twenty minutes of walking, the station was in sight, …as was Light…and somebody else. Taking a moment to hide myself, I looked back to inspect his new colleague. She was certainly beautiful, but her aura gave her the impression of a woman in her mid-twenties, so it couldn’t have been a girlfriend. It didn’t take long to decipher the truth, though, at which point I contacted Shahim.

"Hey, Shahim. Can you hear me?"

“…Uh…yeah, I can. What do you want?”

"…I need you to move that black knight in the middle of the board, so that it's two spaces over and one space up from the white queen."

“…Sure. …Alright, so why did I do that?”

"…Because I’ve found out what that knight represents…and Light’s talking to her right now."

“Oh? And who is she?”

"…I’m not sure, but it seems that she knows something vital. That’s why he’s staying close to her."

“Hm? You don’t think she knows that he’s Kira, do you?”

"No, not a chance, otherwise she wouldn’t be getting so friendly with him. …Hold on, give me a minute."

I let everything I knew about Light’s actions up until now circulate through my mind. After thinking on it for no more than fifteen seconds, I found my answer.

"…I doubt the authorities have picked up on the fact that Kira kills in ways other than heart attacks. And the bus-jacking last week…maybe that’s it."

"She must know that Kira can kill with methods besides a heart attack. Evidence like that could send the authorities marching right up to Light’s front door."

“Can’t he ask for her name and make it sound like a friendly exchange?”

"…No. I wouldn’t be surprised if he already tried that. If she was smart enough to discover that he can use other killing methods, she’ll know that it’s much wiser to use an alias in public. He’s gonna have to win her trust before he can move further with this. …Move the queen one space over, so that it’s directly across from the knight."

“Got it. Why move it closer, though?”

"He’s gonna have to remain close to her, so that she doesn’t tell anyone else what she knows. Right now, his main goal is to get rid of her, but…knights are known for their unique movements, so she’s not going to make it easy for him. In this position, she only has two options. She can either retreat back, forcing him to follow her, …or she can take that nearby pawn, giving him the chance to take her out of the game. …It all comes down to her next move."

I kept an eye on them for another eight minutes, waiting for some form of confirmation that Light had successfully disposed of this threat. It wasn’t until I saw her give him her license that I held the radio up to my mouth again to pass on the good news.

"Shahim, move the black knight…to take out the pawn, then move the nearby white knight to the same space. She’s out of the game."

“Hehehehe, looks like he got out of that one.”

"…Yeah, …but this game has barely started. …It won’t be long, though, before things start to take an interesting turn. …Alright, I’m on my way back now."
