Okay, this is currently my favorite of all the chapters, solely because of the explanation of the chess game:) I hate to brag, but I honestly think I did a fantastic job in explaining what the pieces representxd I hope you do, too:D Enjoy:)

Progression

Ten days had passed since Light began using the Death Note in my stead…and I was keeping track of every second of it. To be honest, I was highly disappointed with his careless tactics and quickly beginning to regret my choice to arrange him as my double to kill off L. Using the internet and the news to keep track of each of Light’s murders, the pattern I soon discovered in these deaths only made me shake my head in irritation.

"What’s going on? You seem a little pissed off about something."

"Hell, as I ever was. Look at this time chart for the murders that I set up."

Shahim moved in to take a gaze at the aforementioned chart and looked back at me in confusion.

"Okay? The deaths seem to be settled around a certain time of day, but what good does that do you?"

I pointed back at the chart in slight annoyance of his ever-present cluelessness.

"Come on, these are all in after-school hours, Shahim!"

"Hmm?"

He looked back at it once more.

"Oh, you’re right! That would probably give L some kind of hint later on, wouldn’t it?"

"Absolutely. He’s making such careless mistakes, I’m getting sick to my stomach just pointing them out…and the game has barely started yet."

Not only had it hardly begun, but it was about to heat up very quickly. The proof of this was in the emergency broadcast that appeared on the television shortly after I made this statement.

"…And now, we take you live to the ICPO."

I quickly turned the volume up and rearranged my seating on the bed. …It seems the confrontation I was anticipating would happen sooner than I thought. Instantly after this announcement, another man appeared on the screen, in front of whom was a name plate with Lind L. Tailor written on it.

"I head up an international police task force which includes all member nations. …I am Lind L. Tailor, …otherwise known as L…"

"Hehehe, it looks like he’s finally shown his face. So, …do you think Light’s gonna kill him?"

I breathed a sigh of disappointment before responding.

"…Unfortunately, yes."

"Huh? What do you mean by ‘unfortunately’?"

"Come on, Shahim. Seriously?"

Checking to ensure that I had his attention, I looked back at the television as I continued.

"…I mean that this is nothing more than a trap. That man isn’t L. There’s no way he’d take that risk."

Somewhat surprised, Shahim turned his gaze back to the television screen before returning it to me.

"…Whoa. That’s quite an assumption. How do you know?"

"At this point, there’s no possible way that the police, or even L, can ascertain that these deaths are truly murders. Most likely, that man’s nothing more than a stand-in, a doppelganger for L, …to find out whether or not a human being is really behind the deaths of all these criminals. In fact, …"

The moment the next thing I intended to say ran through my mind, a look of shock fell across my face.

"Damn it, Light! If you’re really as smart as I made you out to be, you’ll figure this out, too! …Don’t you dare write down this man’s name!"

Shahim was standing by, silently listening to this outburst.

"What’s wrong? What else is happening here?"

"I’ll tell you exactly what’s happening here! This isn’t a worldwide broadcast! It’s national! He’s doing this to pinpoint Light’s location!"

"What!?"

Finished with my rant, I reached for the remote and turned the television off just as the man on the screen began to spaz out and collapse, much to Shahim’s protest.

"Hey, what’d you that for!?"

"There’s no point. I already know what else is gonna happen."

Getting up off my bed, I walked over to the chessboard in the center of the room and moved the white, king-side bishop into the place of an enemy pawn before moving the black queen to the same space.

"In this way, not a single piece is left in a position to retaliate and dispose of the queen. Light, or Kira as I should call him from now on, just sacrificed a very crucial piece of his game. …Well played, L."

"Heh heh heh, well, at least you now know to take matters into your own hands at times like this. …So, Uric, what exactly do all these pieces represent? I don't recall you informing me of that."

"…Alright. Come over here, Shahim."

Sitting myself down beside the board as he walked over to it, I began my lecture.

"Contrary to what you may think, …Light and L are not the kings. The white king…is the Death Note, the power of which will have to be destroyed in the end. Light is merely a queen, a strong player who uses this power to his gain, while protecting it simultaneously. …The black king symbolizes justice and the people who uphold it, while L, being the current champion of that justice, takes on the role of its respective queen. …The game ends when either the white king is placed in checkmate, meaning that all the Death Notes have been destroyed or confiscated and those who have used them are either dead or in police custody, …or when the black king is placed in the same position, signifying that all those that are willing and capable to uphold justice and seek out Kira have either been killed or have lost all hope in victory. The way I have things set up, …the latter is more likely to happen, …unfortunately."

"Oh…I see. And what of the other pieces?"

"Hmm…indeed. The knights represent those who also protect their respective kings. The white ones are either Kira’s supporters or, if the future allows it, …anyone else who manages to obtain a Death Note and proceeds to help Kira in his mission. The black knights are L’s subordinates, those that will be of the most use to him in his investigation. They will be either members of the Task Force or those who hold valuable information and are willing to share it. …With me, so far?"

"Uh, …yeah."

"Good, now…the bishops are a bit more tricky, but they basically represent any advantages that either side holds over the other. Currently, both sides have one to represent their opponent’s ignorance of the other’s identity. Kira DID have one to represent L’s ignorance of his whereabouts, but as we just saw, …he now knows precisely where to find him. The other black bishop represents…the world."

"Huh? And how’s the world fit into all this?"

"…Thanks to L...and Light, everyone now knows of Kira’s existence and most people will likely now regard him as nothing more than a murderer, …which they should. But, as long as Kira exists, eventually, the people of the world will begin to look the other way, and begin seeing him exactly as Light wants them to see him as…a God. The world’s views on Kira and his so-called ‘justice’ are a very important factor in this game. However, that will most likely occur only after L’s death, should it ever come to pass. …The castles are even more difficult to comprehend and, in the simplest explanation I can give, they represent anything that must be done before the king can be properly finished off. As of right now, I cannot give you their literal representations. They will eventually make themselves known to both of us, but I can tell you this…"

"What’s that?"

"…In order for this conflict to resolve itself, the queens will have to make contact, either with both being taken out in the resulting battle…or one emerging victorious over the other."

"Ah, gotcha, …and what about the pawns?"

"The pawns symbolize various factors, which will make themselves known over the course of the game, but I can tell you that, for right now, …I, myself, am a pawn."

"Oh, is that right? And which one are you?"

I looked up at him with a look of both confusion and slight disappointment.

"…I suppose I should reiterate that statement to you. I am their entity…their overall consciousness. As long as at least one of them still remains in the game, I do, as well."

"And what if all eight are taken out of the game? What happens to you, then?"

"Well, …I suppose that means that I have either died, relinquished ownership of my Death Note and given up on this entire plot, …or it means that one of them has made it to the other side of the board and reemerged as a new queen. If things go as I've planned them out to, the latter will be the first to occur, …within six years to be precise. …And there you have it, Shahim."

"Heh heh, it never stops fascinating me as to just how well you've thought this all through. ...And you plan to keep the board game set up this way for the next six years?"

"…Huh, I never really thought about it that way. But, I suppose so."

We both chuckled at this.

The days following the broadcast passed by one after the other and no major actions had yet to be taken by either side since then, at least not to my knowledge. As I had expected, L seemed to have caught onto the pattern in the murders, as I soon noticed a change of pace in Light’s killings. This aside, my days recommenced with no apparent differences, …until a week later. That day, the school hours continued unchanged, though the walk home did not, as manifested by the faint sound of footsteps some twelve yards behind me. Fighting the urge to investigate this visually, I continued my way home and, once inside, I requested a favor of Shahim.

"Hey, Shahim, I need a favor."

"Does it have to do with that man’s name?"

I paused once he asked this question, greatly irritated that he mentioned nothing of this before, but it was pointless to argue about it now, so I answered him.

"I don’t need to know what it is, …just something about it."

"Oh? And what is it?"

"…What language is it in?"

He was obviously confused, but I urged him to answer, anyways.

"Just tell me and I can explain it to you afterwards!"

"Alright, alright already! …It’s in English, why?"

"…English? So, he’s not Japanese, but…who else would come to Japan to follow people around like this? …Ah, of course."

"Thank you, Shahim. I just needed to know who was following me."

"Hm? What are you talking about? I didn’t even give you his name."

"I don’t mean the individual, Shahim, …more so who that individual works for."

"And whose that?"

"…Considering I’m unsure that the CIA does this sort of fieldwork, I suspect the American FBI."

"Huh? But, why would they be in Japan?"

"…It must’ve been L’s doing. As I expected, Light’s careless actions made it all the more obvious to him that he’s dealing with a student…and it seems that Light and I are now suspects for his investigation."

"Why the two of you, in particular?"

"Well, he may have received background information on me and interpreted it as a possible motivation. As for Light, …the answer lies with his father."

I had never spoken about Light’s family to Shahim before, so I wasn’t surprised when he appeared to be surprised himself.

"Father? Why, who is he? And why would an American be following you around instead of one of the Japanese Police?"

"His name is Soichiro Yagami and he’s the Chief Detective of the Japanese Police Force. Light seems to have been stealing information from them by looking into his father’s computer files, since he started changing the times of day in which he kills recently. He must’ve known that they suspected a student for him to make such a drastic change. It appears to have completely backfired, though. ...As for why L would bring the FBI in to investigate rather than order the Task Force to, it seems that he's remaining cautious of Kira's sudden change of pace so soon after beginning to suspect him of being a student. He knew that he would've had to have access to their information to know that, so the odds of Kira being a Task Force member really aren't that slim. L's just being careful is all."

"...I see. That would explain things rather well. So, what’re you gonna do about your stalker?"

"…Absolutely nothing."

"Huh? What, so you’re just gonna keep letting him follow you around like that?"

I smiled as I answered his complaint.

"Why not? If he dies, L will immediately suspect those he was following. Besides, …it’s not like I have anything to hide right now."

I headed into the kitchen and grabbed two cookies, passing one to Shahim, before heading upstairs to continue my observation of Kira’s movements.

"…Things are beginning to progress, …if not quite so smoothly at first. It won’t be long, though. The closer L gets to Light, the sooner it is until they make contact, and once they do, …one of them will die. And I’ll be willing to wait for it, …even if it does take every year Light has left to happen."
