As the title implies, Uric is basically mirroring L’s actions when he first became involved in the Kira case, letting his stand-in know that he made a crucial mistake early on. As a whole, the chapter is probably rather sloppy, but I’ve been focusing more on my other works recently, so I’m basically just running off a desire to finish this story at this point. Anyhow, this chapter pretty much consists solely of the tape now broadcasting around New York City, just in case anyone gets confused by that. Enjoy
“This is a city-wide broadcast addressed to the people of New York City. I…am L. This is the alias that the members of the populace who are aware of my existence have called me by for some time now and, for most of you, it seems to be sufficient in its purpose. …There are those, however, who are dissatisfied with my lack of a real name, one that the general public can easily obtain. …I am now speaking to one of them, in particular, and I think that HIS identity should go without saying. Isn’t that right, …Kira?
Yes, old friend, I know that you’re here. And I do admit that you gave me quite the slip six years ago…huhhhhh, and just as I was on the verge of bringing you in, too. And during the time that you’ve been allowed to roam free, you’ve even managed to bring your body count up into the four-digits, possibly even more. …No matter, though. I’ve finally caught up with you once again, so we can start right where we left off. And I must say, the methods I used to do it are rather…embarrassing…for you, that is. And since I enjoy toying with you so much, I’ll be sure to go through the process with you step-by-step. Tell me, Kira, …does the name Tomoko Ichiwa sound familiar by any chance?
I would certainly hope that my greatest adversary recognizes the names of those he has murdered, …and certainly those that he murdered recently, just an hour or so ago, to be precise. But, I suppose I shouldn’t blame you for not knowing what quandaries killing him would present for you…and for that, I suppose I owe you an explanation. …The man whose name I have just mentioned was actually arrested approximately thirty-two hours ago and his crimes have been kept hidden until seven hours ago, when his name was broadcast across New York City…and only New York City. I will admit, there are some flaws in this logic, since someone could have very easily announced this to the world via the Internet, …but since your country has been kind enough to allow me the chance to monitor any such information being sent out of the New York area, as well as the short length of time it took for you to take the bait, …I no longer have any doubts that this information has remained solely within New York City, …just as you do. I suppose the matter of where is still a rather difficult problem to solve, but it’s nothing I cannot handle. In fact, I’m fairly certain that this matter will resolve itself completely…within the next six months.
Huhhhh, to be honest with you, the ease of this operation’s success has even caused me to question whether or not the man I’m addressing now is, in fact, the same man I have been chasing for over six years, …just to give you an estimation of how severe a mistake this was on your part. But, worry not. When I find you…and I WILL find you, the two of us will be able to sort this small predicament out for ourselves before I have you sentenced…to death. …Hmhmhmhmhm, our game of cat-and-mouse has begun anew, Kira. And it would be in your best interest to find out where you stand at this stage of the game…before I find you.”
And with that, the tape came to an end and the giant monitor faded to black once more. Looking around, I noticed the incredulous faces around me that continued staring at the screen, putting a wicked smile on my own as I silently celebrated the success of this operation.
"Now, remind me again why it was important to use L for all of this?"
"Hmhm, I’ve told you before, Shahim. …Because L is the embodiment of hope…hope that the world will eventually escape Kira’s impending rule."
"Yeah, I got that part. But, why give them hope? Aren’t you trying to rid all these people of exactly that?"
"Yes? And what better way to do that than to feed it to them little by little…and then snatch it all away in one fell swoop?"
I didn’t have to elaborate much further before it all began making sense to him.
"Ooooohhh."
"Hmhmhmhm, precisely. I’ll make them think that L is still there, still searching for this demon of a man known as Kira. For years, if I must. And then, …it’ll stop. “L” will announce his defeat to the world and with his surrender, …that of the entire human race will follow. …Hmhmhmhm, after all, if L can’t defeat Kira, then what other option do they have…when the only person left who could possibly take his place IS Kira?"
Before he could respond or I could elaborate further, a ringing sound suddenly began emitting from my pocket, forcing me to bring this conversation to a halt before answering the phone that was nestled inside it.
"Hey, Hiroto. …Don’t worry, I’m on my way back now. …Hmhmhm, I’m flattered. …Good-bye."
I flipped the device closed and returned it to my pocket before redirecting my attention to the Shinigami standing beside me.
"Let’s go, Shahim. …Our first search of many begins now."
