The time-skip made it a little difficult to write this one, but hopefully, it turned out okay. I definitely think it starts out kind of rough, but I think that the chapter gets much better as it progresses, especially near the end:D Enjoy:)

A New Queen

The world has forgotten war. Crime is almost nonexistent. The weak and defenseless now have nothing to fear. …These are the few pros of Kira's existence. …Murder is now celebrated as a divine act. The internet has become the equivalent of Death Row. …Much of the world has abandoned God in belief that they have found a new one. …These are just some of the countless cons of Kira's wrongful idolization. These creatures, known as “Kira worshippers”, who now walked the same ground as I, …who had the nerve to say that they were human as I was, …had left me utterly disgusted by their…desperation. I was in no position to protest, though. …I was ultimately the reason why the world was in its current state, after all.

The past six years have had their…minor achievements, though. After graduating from To-Oh two years prior, I had managed to secure my position as a highly sought-after detective, giving me the opportunity to show my exceptional deductive reasoning to the world at one time or another. I'm sure Light had noticed my growing threat at the time, but I kept myself safe by publicly voicing my views on Kira's plans and my refusal to take part in his capture, preventing the possibility of him doing away with me…for however long he was willing to take such a risk. …Every day that passed by, …each waking hour that brought me closer to the day Light had been scheduled to die has increased my disgust in the being he had likely now become. He probably no longer knew hunger, nor happiness, …nor love, …though that’s not to say that I did, either. The last six years have been spent primarily in my home, each waking moment fueled by my lack of interest in the world around me…and my refusal to develop any. I didn't deserve happiness, …let alone love, so I barred myself from them. I had almost dissolved any connections I had with Light, though I’m sure he had long since forgotten that I was ever his friend. The only companion I now had was Shahim, who I could hardly label as a friend. …In all honesty, at this point in my plan, the only thing I could accurately call him was…an ace-in-the-hole, …because he would eventually become my greatest asset…and the reason my plan would ultimately succeed.

Since the day I ceased all investigation into Light’s progress, I had been left with virtually no insight into his actions leading up to his demise. That would change significantly on the 25th of November in 2012, …through the same source that I received most of my information from: news broadcasts.

“This is Demegawa live! My comrades and I have finally been pointed the hideout of the evil organization bent on trying to catch our beloved god Kira! We now have the building completely surrounded! Right now, our enemies appear to be hiding within the building, but they won’t be able to hide from us for long! Behold the power of the people, THE POWER OF JUSTICE!! …Fellow Kira supporters, I urge you! Do not rush the building all at once! The traitors may attempt to blend in with the crowd to escape! I am Kira’s loyal servant and spokesman! YOU MUST LISTEN TO ME!! Find them, move them from the building, and bring them in front of the cameras! They’ll be a sacrifice to Kira!”

"…They’re so damn…disgusting."

I felt that I couldn’t sit through the entire broadcast without vomiting, so I turned it off at that point. It didn’t really matter, though. …I had a good estimation of what was going to happen.

It’s hard to believe that I still spent most of my life sat on my bed with my legs crossed, …especially after twenty-two years. I took out the lollipop that was currently in my mouth and, …for the first time in six years, turned to Shahim to discuss my plans.

"Shahim, …I think I’ve found the men behind Light’s demise. No, …I’m certain of it."

"Hmmm, …so, getting back into the game, are we?"

"…Yeah. I’m not sure exactly who they are, but, given the fact that they’re broadcasting from Los Angeles, I can almost ascertain that its members consist mostly of FBI or CIA members, if not a combination of the two. …It seems the United States had its own agenda regarding the search for Kira."

"Hehe, sure looks like it. …Wait, what do you mean by 'had'?"

"…You don’t remember the U.S. President’s press conference a week ago? He said that the United States had ceased from opposing Kira’s rule any longer. This organization was likely government-funded, so they should’ve been disbanded, but it seems they plan to continue to search for Kira on their own."

"…That’s the problem, though. If these were merely FBI and CIA agents, then the odds of them defying the U.S. government’s orders to disband would be highly unlikely. The chances of these agencies choosing such members specifically to keep this group in operation are…almost nonexistent. …And then, there’s something else to keep in mind. Light had to have been behind the infiltration of their headquarters. He’s the only one who would want them out of the picture, …which implies that they already know too much. They certainly already know about the Death Note, otherwise they’d pose virtually no threat to him. …But, the only ones who should know of it, aside from Light, Misa Amane, and myself, are the members of the Japanese Task Force, so…there must be another group…or individual involved, …someone intelligent enough to piece this all together, …someone capable of matching or even exceeding L’s caliber. …Now, the question remains as to who that might be."

I wasn’t very fond of the idea at the time, but it seemed as if I had no choice, if this was going to work. …I would have to use my Death Note…for only the third time in the six years I’ve owned it.

"…Shahim."

"Hm?"

"I need you to do something for me, …something very, very important."

"…Uh, alright, but I better be getting some cookies out of this."

"…Of course, …one hundred, to be exact."

"Huh!?"

His look of surprise was immediately followed by a look of absolute joy, …which was rather impressive, given his limited facial movements.

"Oh, absolutely! I’ll do anything, just name it!"

I couldn’t help but smirk. I hesitated for a moment to think this through, but I eventually made up my mind.

"…I need you to find Light…and follow him around for a while."

I didn’t expect Shahim to take this very easily…and I turned out to be correct, …as usual.

"What!? How the hell am I supposed to do that!? You don’t even know where he is right now."

"…Considering the fact that the NPA director was reported kidnapped last month, he’s likely in L.A. right now, as well. It’s all right, though. …I already have a plan in place to get you into contact with him."

"Oooh, is that right? …Well, let’s hear it."

"…Unfortunately, I’m unable to kill criminals at the moment, since they might coincide with Light’s own killing agenda."

"Wait! You plan to use your Death Note after all this time!?"

"…I’m afraid so. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to do so until the day of Light’s death, but I’m running out of options…and I need to know who his new enemies really are before I can take any action. The entire point of using Light was to remove any obstacles in my way, so this’ll all be pointless if these people survive. …Anyways, as I said, I can’t kill criminals right now, …but there is a man that lives two houses away from mine. He’s never committed a lawful crime in his life, so far as I know, …but he is a very firm worshipper of Kira. He watches “Kira’s Kingdom” weekly and religiously and I heard him bragging about writing criminals’ names on the internet just a few days ago. …Having said that, I have no room left to feel sorry for this man. He’s no less revolting of a human being than I am."

"…Alright. So, what’re you gonna do with him?"

Before I could write anything in the notebook, I had to look through what I had already written and make a good estimation of when to set Shahim up to follow Light.

"…When I wrote Light’s name in the Death Note, I specified that he would die approximately six years, two months, and one week from the day I entered that in the notebook. Given that that was on the 21st of November, it would put the date of his death at…January 28th. …I’ll give the man two weeks to live, during which he’ll come within thirty feet of Japanese policeman Light Yagami. I’ve already written Light’s name once, so writing it again shouldn’t have any effect on him. …That should put you in a fair enough position to begin tailing him."

"…Well, that does sound reasonable. That might just work out. So, what do I do while I’m tailing him?"

"…Just keep your ears perked, Shahim. I only need to know where I might get a chance to end this myself, should Light be unable to dispose of these people on his own. …I just need a location. After that, I already have an idea in mind on how the rest of this will resolve."

"Hmm, is that right? …Well, for one hundred cookies, I’m not about to say no, but…what about the other Shinigami?"

"…Tell him everything."

"Huh?"

"Find him, pull him aside when you get a chance and let him know exactly what’s going to happen. …If I’m correct in assuming this, he’s taking no sides in this battle between Kira and his captors. He’s merely a spectator, …like myself. If so, then there’s no danger because he’s not going to tell Light anything about your meeting."

"…Wait, then why tell him anything at all? He’ll be the only one who knows I’m there, so why tell him about your plan?"

"…Because my plan’s success…depends on his silence. When Light and this new queen finally collide, and they will, …I will be there to ensure that nobody survives. I don’t need him giving either side any hints that there’s a third party amongst them with yet another Death Note. Be it looking around to try and find my hiding place or even simply laughing uncontrollably because he already knows how this will end, the risk is too great, …no matter how high the odds are that his actions will make them aware."

"…Got it. And what about you?"

"…I still need to ensure that all of this will ultimately work in my favor. I’ll ask you to return at least forty-eight hours before the…big day arrives, regardless of whether or not you find the information I’m looking for. That should be plenty of time for me to get a good idea of how this final confrontation will go down and act accordingly."

"…Alright. And what if I can't find anything out by then?"

I had to admit…that thought had crossed my mind several times before. I wasn’t exactly proud of my answer, either.

"…Well, …at least Light was able to dispose of L. But, if they don’t die now, …then they’re probably not going to."

"Hm?"

"I’m not in the same position that Light was, Shahim. His status gives him an opportunity to meet these men, though it’s at the cost of his own safety. …I’m not willing to make that sacrifice. I’ve got eighty-six years left to live, according to you, …and I don’t plan to spend them in prison."

"…Well, we’ll see how things work out. Anything else?"

"…No, I suppose you can leave now. I’ll see you in…sixty-two days, Shahim."

"…Yeah. Good luck."

"Hmm, you too."

And, with the first fraction of my plan now in place, Shahim left just as he had came six years ago, only this time, I wasn’t facing the opposite direction. Now, a final lingering question remained.

"…Now that I have a way of discovering the location of their meeting, …I need to know exactly what will happen when it occurs."

I had no more than sixty-two days to find out.

My first hint to this question’s answer came two days later. I was never entirely sure what prompted me to watch that filth known as “Kira’s Kingdom”. It might have been that I merely wanted to feel the burden of my guilt at all times…or it might have been because I was certain that Light would have that prawn of a man Demegawa killed any day now. …I was partially right.

“Greetings to all my fellow Kira worshippers! I am Demegawa, the voice of our god Kira. Behold! This is the new Kira’s Kingdom, which shares its name with this program. Its construction is going smoothly, but will depend on the generous support of our loyal viewers. Once it is completed, let us welcome our God here!”

"Demegawa, …you damn parasite of a human being. If Light doesn’t find time to do you in soon, …I might be forced to myself."

“We are now accepting donations, starting at the million yen mark towards the creation of Kira’s Kingdom. So, if you truly love Kira, then send donations to the following address…”

Love…Kira, …two poisonous words that shouldn’t be within the same page of text, let alone the same fragment of a sentence. At this point, my boiling point had nearly hit the floor and I reached forward to open the notebook lying in front of me. Pulling out a black pen and clicking the end to bring forth the ink, I decided to give Demegawa another thirty seconds to live.

Light, …if you plan to do something about this, this is your cha-…wait. …That’s it!

“Next on the program, it’s time for me to introduce the new leaders I have chosen for Kira’s Kingdom. …The first gentleman is…”

I watched in near shock as the man he had just presented to the world fell to the ground, cold…and dead. I clicked the pen a second time to retract the tip, smiling in satisfaction as I did, …much to my own disgust.

"…So, you found a way past these obstacles, after all. …Well done, Light."

“Uhhh…we will unite with Kira and work with him!”

I continued to look on as the other three gentlemen standing behind Demegawa tumbled down the steps in front of them. I almost let out an uncontrollable burst of laughter at the irony in that maggot’s final words.

“…Ah, save…me…”

As I leaned forward to catch a better view of the murder that was about to take place, I came to my senses and switched the broadcast off, just as Demegawa began gripping his chest. I instantly recalled the fact that I deserved death as much as he did, forming the Sign of the Cross in hopes that it still meant something.

"…God, have pity on me."

With this new information at my disposal, I quickly put it to use, closing my eyes and deciphering the clues I now had.

"Hmm, if you can’t act right now, …then there’s little chance that Misa can, either. So, …it seems you’ve picked someone else to carry out Kira’s killings for you…and sent him Misa’s Death Note. …Well, I suppose that person’s identity isn’t important at the moment, but…that does give me a decent hint as to what your plan entails, Light. You hope to let this man know of the meeting you will soon have with your new enemies…and have him eliminate them for you, probably in addition to those left on the Task Force, as well. Then, everyone you know that also knows about the Death Note will be gone, returning the playing field to the way it originally was. …Of course, one mustn’t forget that it will ultimately backfire on you, otherwise I wouldn’t need worry that you’ll fail. …That leaves two options. Either you will be brought to justice before your meeting with this new queen…or he’ll figure out who your new accomplice is…and take the Death Note you gave him. …But, if he’s truly a successor to L as I’m led to believe, …then he’ll surely attempt something much more dramatic to expose you, …such as…aaah, how about that? Could he really be thinking of switching it out for a fake? That would certainly put a dent in your plans, but…that sounds like something you would surely be prepared for, Light. You’d almost certainly make a fake notebook in retaliation…and have your new crony hide the real one until the day it’s needed again. …But, that doesn’t quite add up yet. There must be another factor at play here that hasn’t made itself known yet. …Well, it’ll be known before long. …Shahim, I hope things are going well at your end."

As if it had been predetermined, every small piece of this puzzle that would be my own reclamation of Kira’s title was coming together perfectly, …though a few pieces had yet to find where they belong. I only had to wait another eight days to figure it out, though. The date was the 5th of December when a vaguely familiar face appeared on NHN, …one of the few channels I still watched anymore.

“Good evening. This…is Kiyomi Takada from News Six. Starting today, it will be my duty to spread the word of Kira accurately and quickly. From now on, NHN will…”

My laughter was controlled once again, though I did allow a small chuckle to get through.

"So, …Kiyomi Takada, huh? I remember seeing her at To-Oh University, during my years there. Now that I think of it, …I remember Light seeing her, as well. Now, that does make things click much easier than before. There’s no doubt in my mind that Light will attempt to make use of her. …In fact, …if she was truly chosen by Kira, …then she must have contact with Light’s stand-in, which would also give him the chance to speak with-"

This time, there was no holding back. The laughter that ensued as this realization hit me was just barely drowned out by the music that I had playing throughout the house.

"So, it’s all coming together. …God, …why is it that you want my plan to succeed so much?"

Leaning forward and resting my chin on my arms, I closed my eyes and let all this information flow through my head.

"Alright, so based on what I’ve accumulated so far, …Light has given the task of killing criminals to a person that he has watched over for some time now, …one that he’s deemed worthy of the task and capable of carrying out his orders without actually giving them to him. At the moment, he’s merely a diversion for the other members of the Task Force, but for the new queen, …he intends that he’ll figure out who it is…and begin tailing him. Meanwhile, he’ll arrange to meet Kiyomi once again and, while the two of them are alone, he’ll trust that his accomplice will contact her, given the premise that he is already doing so. Supposing that his choice was as well-made as he believes, he’ll be presented with a chance to speak with him, immediately giving him a hint to let him know that he’s the one who sent him the Death Note, since the room they’re in will likely be wiretapped. After proving his status to Light and the Task Force, who’ll definitely be listening in, he’ll have it worked out so that he can remove the wiretaps and inform Kiyomi of who he really is. …Being his ex-girlfriend, she’ll gladly accept his offer to join him in his plans. From then on out, he’ll use her to communicate his ideas to the stand-in Kira, …one of which will involve creating a fake Death Note, in order to fool the agents that are tailing him. …But, since he still needs to convince them that he’s the one committing the murders, he’ll send some pages from the real one to her, afterwhich he’ll begin sending her names and photographs of criminals to kill in his stead. Meanwhile, he’ll simply continue writing in the fake Death Note, just as he did with the real one. As this goes on, Light will count on his opponent doing something drastic, …in this case, switching out his stand-in’s notebook for a fake that’s identical to the real. Then, once the man is certain that this is what actually occurred, he’ll use Kiyomi to transfer this information over to Light, signaling to him that the match has been won. And, once their meeting’s been established, …all he’ll have to do then…is be patient. And when the day finally comes, the stand-in Kira will bring the real Death Note out once again and make his way to their meeting place. And while he’s there, …he’ll kill everyone present, except for Light."

I thought this over numerous times to ensure the maximum possibility of its accuracy, …then I turned my attention towards the mistake that would ultimately ruin Light.

"…That’s what Light intends on happening, …but I’ve already seen the outcome of this little dance of theirs…and it’s not a pretty sight. …The big flaw in his plan will most likely fall on Kiyomi. If something should happen to her, leaving her unable to right names, then she’ll have to inform the stand-in that he needs to begin writing names again, helping to avoid suspicion on her part. …If the odds are in my favor, …that’ll be the point when he unintentionally reveals the location of the real Death Note. …L was cocky and liked to face Kira head-on…and that’s what this new queen will likely do, as well. …He’ll make an exact copy of his Death Note and then leave that one in its place, taking the real one for himself. So, when the day comes and he writes every name except for Light’s, …there will be nowhere for either of them to turn. …And that’s where I come in…and kill everyone that was ever involved in the Kira case."

It all fit together so perfectly, …I couldn’t help but flinch at the thought. It was over. The moment that Shahim returned with a location, …I won.

"God, …why did you waste such intellect on a creature such as me?"
