Which did you guys like better? I personally got love for both, very similar themes despite being different genres. My opinion alternates every so often. I was never big on mecha, so for Code Geass to draw me in to watch both seasons several [many] times is an achievement in its own. But then there's the feels I get for Deathnote and my addiction to psychological/thriller/mystery anime. As you can see I'm still conflicted on which show is superior. :mad:_@:

Your opinions?

really hard choice, Might slightly favour code geass since the second part of death note wasn't as great as the first, still good though

Well I'm sure it's already pretty obvious, but I prefer Code Geass. Death Note is an excellent story no doubt, but there are a number of reasons why I'd say CG is easily the superior in my eyes.

Storywise the two are both excellent, in terms of plot both CG and DN kept me interested throughout and were very entertaining. Death Note caught me more quickly than Geass, though in the later stages Geass was a good deal more impressive than Death Note. Regardless, the two are both great with story and since they're both pretty different, it's not really all that fair to compare in this aspect. I will say that Geass's ending was much more satisfying and glorious though.

Both Death Note and Code Geass have the clash of ideals as a theme, though I was much more attached to Geass's. With Geass, there was no good or evil in it, just different people with different views and different beliefs, fighting for what they felt was right. Though Lelouch was gifted with awesomeness and main character development, pretty much all the sides had justifiable reasons for what they did and it was hard to hate any given group after learning their motives, with a few exceptions. Death Note did a great job with this as well, although after the early stages of Death Note this faded away a tad, as it became clear that Light was more a villain than a hero as the story continued on. With Geass you never really could say anyone was a villain, even though many characters went to extremes to satisfy their goals.

What did it for me though was the characters. Both CG and DN do a great job with developing their main character. Light and Lelouch go through insane development as the story progresses and it's truly something to see. However, this is where things get tricky. Lelouch goes through moral dilemmas multiple times throughout the story, questioning if what he's doing is right, crossing the line between the noble effort of fighting for who he cares about and chaotically taking away lives. Though Lelouch can be ruthless in his methods, it is clear throughout the entire story that he genuinely cares about those close to him and they always serve as a motivator for him, making him a much more sympathetic character. Light's moral dilemma lasts for the first episode, maybe a tad bit longer, and then after that it's pretty much done. Light didn't go from hero to murderer in one episode, but it's clear that as he goes on, he loses the lawful innocence he once had, and comparing Light after a good chunk of time with the Death Note to how he was upon losing his memories makes this very clear. By the end, Light is a detestable, selfish character who only serves his own goals and has completely lost sight of why he began using the Death Note in the first place. It's a fascinating progression of development, but the fact remains that Light is very disagreeable by the end. Lelouch on the other hand never loses sight of his aims and remains respectable throughout. The contrast between the two is proven with the endings of the series, which I shall not spoil but it is obvious for those who have watched.

But that's not all. Aside from Lelouch, Code Geass has a wide range of characters with different personalities, beliefs, and takes on the world around them. Seeing the contrasts between them as well as how they interact is great. A good majority of the characters who matter in Code Geass receive utterly fantastic development and become sympathetic by the end. This is where my key problem with Death Note lies. I shall concede that L is by far my favorite character in Death Note, but even I must admit that his development was very minimal. To be frank, anyone in DN who was not Light Yagami had either minimal or nonexistent character development. Most of them were static for a vast majority of their screen time and/or didn't leave much of an impression on me. Death Note's side cast was very weak in comparison to Geass's side cast and this is the crucial factor that determines why I will always deem Geass to be superior to Death Note.

I could probably discuss more but I'm tired of ranting. Contrary to what many anime fans say, the two are actually very different stories and aside from the male lead getting a special power to revolutionize the world in his own way, they have very little in common in terms of genre and story progression. But when it comes to story elements, I just can't say Death Note>Code Geass.

I have only really read about Deathnote, and watched a couple of clips, but I did know the basic story plot for the main character...so I agree when you compare their justifications (or loss of one)!

I'd say based on this I can deffinatly say that Code Geass is more appealing to me!

I'm going to go with DeathNote, even though in the anime they left a big chunk out that was written in the manga. It was still good though.

Death Note...although I liked Geass too.

L as Light's opponent was far better than any of Lelouch's. Also, a little too many guns and robots in Geass for my taste.

Death Note vs. Code Geass

Story: Similar stories, both protagonists trying to change the world. CG had good start and great ending, but they just couldn't bridge them properly and the plot twists were sometimes quite forced. Death Note instead had perfectly thought out twists that left no holes in the story, and second part was great setting for the ending. +1 for Death Note

Animation/Art: Code Geass had skinny looking characters, but the art is appealing nonetheless. However Death Note's Art was even more appealing with realistic looking characters, animation was great and they made even eating a potato chip look epic. +1 for Death Note

Characters: Both main characters are somewhat similar, but IMO Light's development was better, but the main reason for that is probably because of the huge cast of Code Geass which in a way was a good idea, but some of them turned out to be dead weight and had no real purpose in the story. +1 for Death Note

Sound: Code Geass has fitting soundtracks, but they aren't anything special. They did do great with the openings, especially the first and last opening. Death Note has the best OST as far as I know, some examples being:

Death Note as well had great openings , so +1 for Death Note

I know everything and everyone is entitled to their opinion; but damn yours sucks. If you're going to put effort into your judgement; at least provide examples. As it stands; most of your analysis is just ambigous. You say that some characters were dead weigt; provide an example. You say that some plot twists are forced; which ones? Etc.

Otherwise just do this; Code Geass wins, LOLKTHXBAI

I'm actually fine with what natssuu said, after all I was only asking for opinions. I'd even settle for two word answers

Code Geass is better as an anime, however if you want to talk about it in terms of Light/L vs Lelouch, then Light and L win hands down. I'd say the shows are more or less on the same level as both series progress, Code Geass offering more developement whilst Death Note gives us the Psychological Thriller elements we want to see. I think I can only properly compare the series when I look at the endings. Death Notes ending was... terrible. I won't spoil it, but it was really bad and completely silly considering what had been happening prior. Code Geass' ending on the other hand was absolutely incredible, and one of my top 3 endings EVER.

I've always had a love for Death Note that I never really found in Code Geass, though I still find it a very good anime. Light and L are two of the best anime characters ever, in my opinion, and top both Lelouch and any supporting characters from Geass any day. In addition, the initial battle of mind and strategy between Light and L tops any conflicts Lelouch faced as Zero, which wins it for me, no matter how much the series downgraded after Near and Mello came in. Also, I just found its plot much more engaging than that in Code Geass. I prefer a battle of wit to a battle of firepower any dayxd

I don't see how Light or L top the best of the Geass characters, they're good no doubt, but there are a number of reasons why they can't compare in my eyes.

Light is a fantastically developed character and is pretty much the symbol of Death Note's main theme......and that's about it. I won't deny that Light's role in the series is what shapes Death Note into being what it is and without his character, it just wouldn't be the same. But as a person I can't stand him, rather, to be frank I can't find an ounce of anything likeable in him. Light is a very selfish, arrogant character. From the very beginning he's set off by the most trivial of things and he makes costly blunders that reflect very badly on his ability. It's not that Light is stupid, he's made many amazing plans that prove his intelligence. But there's one thing that really ruins it for me: his pride. Through the entire series, he's driven by his arrogance, and whenever he does something insanely awful, it's because he was overconfident enough to do it. He's made many terrible mistakes not because he was stupid, but because he has this childish mentality that he has to challenge anyone who dares to go against him and moments like the Lind L. Tailor scene are proof of just how bad his arrogance can get. Because of his pride, Light falls into very obvious traps and gets into situations that screw him over, to an extent that even I feel I could've done a better job just because Light made it that much harder with those actions. I wouldn't say I'm more intelligent than Light, but just by virtue of the fact that I wouldn't take such stupid bait, I'd say I could do just as good a job.

Another thing to think about is the fact that Light doesn't genuinely care about people. He's a very selfish character who deludes himself into thinking that he's doing the world a favor, but after five episodes or so he's derailed from this in favor of fulfilling his own desires. Lelouch, on the other hand, may take drastic measures but genuinely feels guilty about what he does at times. He always keeps his friends in mind and to the very end, Lelouch hopes to make the world better for those close to him rather than fulfilling his own needs. Light, on the other hand, never showed that he cared about anybody and considered all humans disposable, feeling that anybody around was simply a pawn to use. Light lost his humanity very early on, while Lelouch retained it through the entirety of the series.

L is an intelligent and quirky character, but I can't see how he tops the Geass characters either. His character development is minimal, if not downright nonexistent. And that's the case with 90% of Death Note's cast to begin with. L hardly changes at all through the course of the story, and while his habits and tastes certainly make him an unusual and amusing character, pretty much the only contribution L makes to the story is his brain. It makes for some badass moments and I'll concede that Death Note is much more story-centric than character-centric, but the fact remains that L is much more shallow than any main Code Geass character and even a good chunk of the supporting cast. The moral dilemma Lelouch has between bringing about world peace and the devastations necessary to carry it out? Not there. The confusion Suzaku has about maintaining lawful efforts while at the same time trying to crush his best friend for his own deeds? Not there. C.C.'s traumatizing past and how her possession of the Geass has tormented her for ages in so many ways is also development that nobody in Death Note has seen. I could also elaborate about the role of characters like Charles, Jeremiah, Rolo, Shirley, and more but that would take too long. Death Note does a fantastic job developing Light, but only developing Light. Overall Death Note's characterization is very weak, and while I could understand how one could prefer it storywise, I can't fathom how the Death Note cast could possibly be above Geass's cast, which covers a much wider spectrum of personalities and ideals while receiving much greater development.
