I actually just finished Code Geass tonight xD And Death Note is one of the best mangas I've ever read.
Overall, I give the edge to Death Note, however Lelouch > Light. If Light had won in the end and not died in such a pitiful manner, and if L hadn't been absurdly killed off, there would be NO question that DN beats CG. However, Lelouch is a better main character. The ending is nothing short of fantastic, it brings up so many moral and ethical questions as well because Lelouch did many evil things but also often had pure motivations, as his final act proves. Light was a genius but basically went mad with power, which was his downfall.
They are both brilliantly done. I am not usually a fan of mecha anime, but out of the 50 episodes, only 3-4 were slightly uninteresting. It's one of those animes that's just hard to stop watching. Not to mention it also has some epic female characters, which is sorely lacking in much of anime/manga.
Death Note gets the win simply for being an incredibly well written thriller than doesn't stop or slow down one bit, and trolls over and over again.
