Actually, it was stated that Light is equally or a bit smarter than L, for what reasons, that I do not know.
Near came after these two, but we shouldn't forget Mello, who was a crazy genius, though no actual statement exists about how smart he was compared to the others.

I've seen those stats before (there were others with them like creativity, initiative, social skills, etc.). If I remember right, she divided them into both manga and their anime counterparts, which I think L actually was smarter than Light in.
