You have probably noticed by now that the Naruto and Boruto series have a theme that heavily involves death and rebirth. I think that Boruto is destined to experience this also. There are a few ways it could happen but I will try and explain the process as I see it. First thing is that I believe the Hyuga and Uzumaki clans are descended from Hamura. Secondly, the Uzumaki clan developed a way to summon the shinigami. This leads me to believe that they have clan ties to the shinigami. I think it's significant that Hamura is related to them because he guarded the demonic statue to prevent Kaguya's escape. I suspect that Hamura is the shinigami and he became that to give them a way to seal Kaguya after he died. The Uzumaki were given the task and that is why they are so proficient with seals. Their physical prowess may also be the result of generations being in close proximity to the demonic statue. The chakra chains is demonic statue tech. It could also be that BZ had them wiped out because of this.
Now we are witnessing a scenario in which Boruto is pretty much doomed via karma seal overwriting his identity. In the event that this happens will he actually be dead or in limbo? That's where his relation to Hamura comes into play. While in limbo he may actually be able to interact with the shinigami because theoretically speaking it is Hamura and he is Uzumaki and Hyuga bloodline. Kurama was sealed within the shinigami for about 16 years does that count as being a jinchuriki? Now get this... What if the shinigami helps Boruto get his body back through the gate of death and he opens the other gates in reverse order? That way it won't break his body down but has the reverse effect. It would make his body even more powerful in addition to the buffs he receives from opening the gates.
Okay okay the eight gates thing is even more far fetched than the shinigami being Hamura but I think it would be cool anyway. What do you think?
