I am a fan of DBZ but I cannot deny that the power levels are messed up. How can't Goku lift 40 tons at base when he can destroy planets? I have seen a comeback in a thread, claiming that he wasn't using his ki and that he wanted the training to be tough. Then, why did he transform into super saiyan to lift the weights? I am sure that not using his super saiyan and using the ki in his base form would be the best training. Even when not using Ki, his power should be greater than Master Roshi who can destroy the moon at power level 100. Yet, he couldn't lift 40 tons which is nothing to a mountain which weighs at least 10000 tons.

He's wearing several tons from his clothes alone. Plus he's training on x10 gravity. I'll let you do the math.

Also ki be concentrated to create a beam potent enough to destroy something physical effort alone (impact from punch etc) cannot achieve.

I would say that he was trying to increase his natural strength, as going Super Saiyan is a multiplier (x50) of his base stats. For example, if Goku could lift 5 tons base, he could lift 250 tons SSJ. But if he could increase his base strength to lift 10 tons, he could lift 500 tons SSJ. Just my opinion though.

1) I feel gravity point is valid
2) To destroy a planet you only need to hit the core with enough power. Look at Freeza. If he can destroy Namek it does not mean he can lift Namek's weight.
3) Goku base - matches 1% Free za
Goku SSJ1- Defeats 100% Free a

So not that messed up

Their on the grand Kai's planet atm not north Kai's and it was never stated that Gravity was heavier on grand Kai's planet
I'm aware of that but I was backing az eleon reply which about king Kai's not grand Kai's.

Another thing, earth probably has one of the lowest gravity force. Pui pui's planet, king Kai's and planet vegeta were all said to have higher gravity. So while it may not have been stated, it's probably safe to assume the stronger the inhabitants the greater the gravity of the planet itself.

Still 400 ton should be no big deal for someone who can bust moons easily.
He also wears several tons. Add that too. Besides we all know base form Goku is op. Vegeta's attack was meant to destroy the planet and he easily repelled it. This lifting logic does not apply to ki strength imo

All 4 King Kai's can increase Gravity, like gravity manipulation,he made Goku put weights so his powers can work better on him
Besides martial arts training is not about Strength but speed, agility, control, style and King Kai trains him for them,
by adding Tons little by little
